Wow, Suzie, you come up with match up's that boggle my mind, lol, Greg had one of the shortest primes ever, he had very good skills but was never very committed to getting into prime tip top shape and didn't do nearly as well as he was capable of IMO,,,, I would take Page.
Page was way more skilled and probably would've had no problem reaching Willard's chin. A TKO for Greg within five rounds.
neither man could be relied on to show up consistent and put on a truly good show. Willard beat an old Johnson and Page beat a faded Coetzee.. Both guys lost to lesser opponents.. I haven't seen much film of Willard but what I have viewed is less than impressive and I can't say I enjoyed watching Page all that much.. Willard would have the advantage in size and power, plus was in some pretty long lasting bouts over many rounds. Greg was faster, more skilled and hung in there with a better list of men, even if most of those outings were in defeat. Take your pick.
If this was a 45 round fight, I'm going with Jess, Greg was never in very good shape except for one or two fights. Definitely, he probably beat a faded Coetzee, but Greg wasn't at his best either, and Page was the one guy Coetzee in his prime wouldn't have wanted to face anyway. If this fight ends under 15 rounds, gotta go with Page, who had underrated power in both fists.
A fully motivated Page wins this hands down and within 10, but a disinterested Page, while I'd still back him, would squeak home a decision winner.
I will grant you that Page looks quite impressive on paper, but he never lived up to his potential. Based on real world results, we have to go with Willard, probably regardless of distance. I think there have been a lot of people who Page looks better than on film, who would beat him in reality.
Primed Page tears Willard apart in a methodical fashion, winning almost all the exchanges, getting off faster, working angles that Willard can not adapt to... A humorlessly grim destruction that an empathetic ref calls to a quit about round 7.
Would you care to explain what Page has done in the real world, to make you think that he would be likely to stop Willard?
It's not a battle of resumes. It's ability versus ability... both at their best. Prime Page was enormously more quick and skilled while still possessing great length, and at his best, excellent footwork. Willard lumbered around the ring like a sick calf after his mother... no imagination, no speed, just a chin and a size and strength advantage. That's not going to be enough.
This is what you don't seem to get. It is always a battle of resumes on some level. However good a fighter looks on film, it is hard to favor them over a much more proven fighter, if their record suggests that they generally fell short against that caliber of fighter. At that point, a much more detailed explanation becomes necessary. If you then make a more specific pick, such as a knockout within a certain number of rounds, then you need something very concrete from their resume to justify it.
Yes both were lazy and not great trainers. 15rds Page might take a decision, 20 he probably slows to a crawl and gives it away.
