Johnson beat moore and Charles who are much better than Dempsey IMO but styles do make fights so how would this fight play out?
How have you reached the incredible conclusion that Charles and Moore were better than Dempsey, and would it necessarily matter if they were?
Dempsey was naturally bigger than both Moore and Charles and his style would have definately made Johnson uncomfortable.
Weren't better heavyweights, but pound for pound all time yes they were. Charles is a top 5 fighter of all time. His resume blows dempseys out of the water
Bill Brennan almost did and wasnt as good as Tunney or as tough, I think Tunney would have been just fine against Dempsey.
I agree that Tunney might well have beaten ANY version of Dempsey. But Brennan did not "almost" do it at all. He was blasted out in round 6 of a 10-rounder, and in round 12 of a 15-rounder. That's falling far far short of beating a man.
Harold Johnson has a decent chance of winning with discipline boxing skill, but he might just get blasted out.
Brennan was ahead in their fight when Dempsey finally got him. He had wobbled Dempsey in the second and again in the 10th or 11th (I forget) with a punch that nearly tore Dempsey's ear off and forced him to get reconstructive surgery on it after the fight. Watch that complete film and you will see Brennan jab jab jab and then drop over the right whenever Dempsey is able to work his way in close, tie him up, lean on him, and push him around. It was almost exactly the same gameplan that Tunney used only Brennan wasnt nearly as good, durable, or disciplined to be able to stick to it. Dempsey's showing against Brennan was so lackluster that it was hear the rumors of loaded gloves against Willard started. Dont tell me that wasnt "almost" especially considering Brennan's showing was enough to fuel talks of a third fight (despite losing the first two) for another two or three years.
