Yes, Jerry Quarry could have made $200,000 to take on Danny MAC
in Madison Square Garden,

It would have been a better bout to watch,,,,,,4-Rounds of wild-house right hands.

 

How much did he make for Ali II? I really find it difficult to believe that he would have made that much fighting someone who lost to a nobody earlier that year.

 

In 1972 for the Ali II bout, Jerry Quarry's fight purse was $150,000 plus $25,000
training expenses.

Jerry originally turned own a $100,000 offer, when he found out Ali was getting
$550,000.

To make the fight, Muhammad Ali kicked back $50,000 of his purse to Jerry, so Jerry could get $150,000.

The Danny MAC fight was originally scheduled for March, but Jerry had to postpone the bout.
Then it was re-scheduled, but Jerry took the Ali bout, as it was more publicity, plus his brother was offered
a title bout with Bob Foster too.

 

I recall this fight,like it was yesterday. This was the one which assured me that Ali would beat Joe Frazier the next time they fought. Like most,I thought it would be a TITLE rematch. Failed to see two spanners in the works called George Foreman and Ken Norton. Still,things did turn out as thought,just under different circumstances.

JUST BECAUSE HE LOSES TO THE "GREATEST!" DOES NOT MEAN HE'S NOT GOING TO KO DANGEROUS DAN AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN SAY JACK BODELL!- Mac would not have been allowed to be a Quarry sparring partner!

Jerry's Big gun was his Lhook. He would not needed any wild rights, I shutter to think what would have happend! to Mac!!
Jerry would have laughed at him for his reach alone! Anyone who came to Jerry (And Ali did not do this) was in for a rather Long (Lyle ) or short (Shavers, Bodell, Corletti) Evening!

McAlinden's chance of beating Quarry , was greater odds , then Jerry beating the 'Greatest'
PS-Mike Quarry would have beat McAlinden!

 

I remember on this site-someone mentioned about a dozen heavyweight contender fighter's From 60's, 70's Milde, Bonavena, Powder punch Bugner, Blin!!-etc. Would defeat Jerry Quarry- none of these guys defeated, Patterson, Spencer, Shavers, Lyle, Alongi, Mathis, Yet they can all beat Quarry!!!!!!

Quarry made $200,000 for Ali II, Originally $175,000 they had a Vehicle Fire on California Highway (where Some very valuable Boxing Equipment was destroyed!)- So then the promoter's thru Jerry another $25 grand.

 

Yes,one of the fights that saw Ali at his seventies best. Along with the second Norton and Frazier fights plus the Foreman bout.

 

I actually think Ali was close to his absolute best here. By this time he had shed all the rust and was still a young man in peak condition. Problem was time was cathing up, and he had a bit of a roadshow mentally for many of his fights at this point and didnt stay in shape. For Norton II, Frazier II and Foreman he was in top conditon, but he had started to slip bit physically, still great but not as sharp or explosive as before.

 

Jerry was basically undone before the first bell, watching it live we all could see the ko of his brother threw him completely off base. The best he could offer was when he picked Ali up and put him in a corner. It was sad to witness.

 

Yes Danny wouldn't have lasted beyond 3 minutes with
Quarry. I remember when Quarry came over here and knocked Bodell out in the 1st round.
Jack had a reputation of being an awkward fighter to deal with and when after the fight they asked Jerry if he found Bodell awkward he replied "well he sure looked awkward when he fell!"

 

I saw a tape of the second bout between Muhammad Ali and Jerry Quarry shortly after it took place. Ali looked terrific in the bout, much better than he did in many of his other bouts which took place after his comeback. Quarry was a fine fighter, but simply didn't match up well with the likes of Ali and Joe Frazier.

What many don't know is that prior to this bout Ali watched films of Jack Johnson. He dedicated this bout to Johnsons memory and said he would fight Quarry is a Johnson like style. If you watch the fight you can see glimpses of Ali's interpretation of Jack Johnsons style. Correct or incorrect.

 

I think youre thinking of the first fight where Bundini kept shouting "ghost in the house" from ringside, speaking of Jack Johnson, and alluded to white buttons on a black shirt speaking of the few white faces that stuck out against the predominantly black audience. Ali was particularly nasty against Quarry accusing him of being racist etc. Quarry was pretty hurt by this and afterwards Ali went up to Quarry and said it was all for promotional purposes. Pretty B.S. IMO.

 

No. Whereas Bundini was yelling Ghost in the house during fight one it was prior to fight two that Ali watched Johnson in action and stated he would fight Quarry as Johnson would have (something to that effect). If you watch both bouts in fight one he fights Quarry dancing and moving. In fight two Ali fought more flat footed hands lower.....his interpretation of Johnsons style.
