Overrated Bad Decisions?

Eh...Holyfield vs Lewis is one of those fights that should have had more even rounds.

So many rounds follow the same pattern of Holyfield catching jabs with his glove until he gets inside and Lewis holds him, reset, repeat. Nobody deserved to be call a winner of stalemate rounds like that. The logic is Lewis is getting the jabs off and controlling the distance, so he's the winner of that round. Whatever.

 

Did you happen to watch the Chavez vs. Whitaker fight with some pro Chavez goggles? "Putting together more effective offense than whitaker for most of the fight" What??? This line tells me you didn't actually watch the fight did you? You read only Chavez and Don King's comments on the fight.

 

I think Ali - Young is very over rated .. it was an extremely dull fight and Young , in my opinion, was not robbed as many claim time and again .. I do feel Norton was in the third Ali fight, winning at least nine rounds ..

2. A score of 9-3 is only 3 rounds off a draw. That's a bad decision, a "robbery" even, but not as bad as people say, especially in a fight with no KDs or clear 10-8 rounds.

I've seen fights where men have won 10, 11, or 12 rounds and walked away with a LOSS !

 

Controversially Garcia vs Herrera and Berto vs Collazo

 

Briggs-Foreman. Briggs was only guy who put punches together in that fight, but looked gassed. Foreman plodded forward looking confident. It was basically subpar on both ends.

 

Whitaker-Chavez

 

Scores tito vs Oscar a draw I think. Have to watch it again.

 

I said 'much' not 'most' of the fight. Meaning not the majority, but Chavez put enough offense on Whitaker to win a few rounds and not get completely dominated every round he lost. I think when I scored it I had it 9-3. Maybe it was 10-2, maybe 8-4. But Chavez won rounds. Whitaker was indeed robbed, but my point is he didn't win 12 nothing. No one, even Whitaker, embarrasses Chavez to the point that he's hit at will and throwing at air all fight. Chavez is a competent boxer who during the rounds when Whitaker wasn't clearly outlanding him and only measuring with jabs was able to stay in position and land punishing body shots, and keep Whitaker sharp. I started watching boxing in 1997 (pretty much with Whitaker-Oscar, when I not only thought Whitaker won, but really became interested in the art of boxing), and saw this fight around 2000 with a few other Whitaker fights expecting the most dominant performance in the annals of the sweet science. That's not quite what it was. Whitaker deserved the win, and as a win over the greatest fighter of the late 80s/early 90s it should have been his greatest accomplishment... but it wasn't quite the performance it's often made out to be.

 

Toney-Tiberi (I scored it 115-113, Tiberi. It could've gone either way)
Bradley-Pacquiao I (I scored it 114-114.)
Diaz-Malignaggi (I scored it 115-113, Malignaggi. It could've gone either way)
Mayweather-Castillo I (I scored it 114-112, Castillo. People give Castillo the benefit of the doubt & call it a "robbery" because they hate Mayweather. I'm pretty neutral towards Mayweather, but thats how it is.)
Mayweather-Maidana I (I scored it 115-113, Mayweather. Also, see above.)

 

As a Patterson lover, after repeated viewings, his 'loss' to Ellis in 68 is not as much of a robbery as I've so often thought.
It didn't help that the referee was the ONLY judge in the fight tho
In retrospect, Floyd may have given away several rounds with his passivity.
I'm reminded of the old cliche: "You have to take the fight to a champ to win" (Ali-Young comes to mind)
That being said (I may be taking the opposite argument here) Ellis clearly won rounds 1-3-15 and Floyd clearly won rounds 4-6-13-14. Valen scored it 9-6 Ellis. So given that I'm correct, Valen scored rounds 2-5-7-8-9-10-11-12...6-2 Ellis. Patterson was unmarked at the end, Ellis had both eyes closing, a nasty bloody gash over his right eye and a broken nose. IMO Floyd is much more deserving of being a 3 time champ than Ali was in his Spinks 'song and dance' set-up. My $0.02

 

De la Hoya - Whitaker

 

Bugner v Cooper I think a young Joe did enough to win.would have been better for Joe if he lost.like beating her Majesty the Queen beating Cooper national treasure don't you know.

Guerrero-Martinez (I had it 95-94, Guerrero.)

 

I think Thomas Hearns deserved the W in the rematch with Leonard, but I've never viewed the draw as a robbery.

I had it 114-112 Hearns. But if I switch the 1st non-descript round to Leonard and give Leonard a 10-8 in the 12th I would have had it a Leonard win by a point. It was closer than some make it out to be.
