Would swimming laps build up my capacity to throw harder /more punches at a time? Where can swimming benefit a boxing fitness regime?
It would build up muscular endurance for sure and speed maybe but not power unless you look at it for the speed x force angle. I would definitely give it a go if you have access to a pool every workout.
When it comes to throwing good combinations and punching with power the most important thing is balance. Will swimming improve your balance?
No....I've been swimming 1000 meters freestyle 3 times a week since May 25th and one thing I have noticed is less shoulder fatigue in later rounds. I don't swim on boxing days though because then I'm just too tired. :good
My balance is probably my best asset and something that came to me naturally. I really didn't have to learn it and I think I have solid foundation for a boxer. I would say from swimming, my neck and core has gotten much stronger and I am definitely more flexible in that regard.
