Once past the obvious names mentioned you start to look around for the Fluke Merchants, someone who just might of got lucky and sprung an Ambush... by cuts or a Bomb out of the Blue...

I dont know why but whilst i can dimiss Bob Fitzimmons..i.m tempted to put Gunboat Smith... That might mean i have reached the bottom of his particular Barrell and really am s****ing...

 

As it was, all of his best opponents were under 200 lbs, most were washed up and a few gave him all he could handle. So finding someone within the sub-200 lbs perameters shouldn't be hard.

 

I feel that overall Holyfield has the best shot.

I think Marciano takes out Dempsey rather early. I just don't see anyway of Dempsey winning this one.

I also think Marciano beats Johnson. Marciano is no Tommy Burns. He was incredibly slippery and hard to tie up and punched from weird angles that Johnson's parrying would not get. Think of Marciano as much better, harder hitting version of Marvin Hart.

Joe Louis of Schmeling II is a good call. I may have to go with that.

I don't think the 200 lb version of Ali wins. He was green and skittish. If he can dance all night and avoid being trapped he could pull it off but I wouldn't make him a favorite.

 

I understand what you are saying. His ceiling seems to be pretty severe. Even at 200, I am starting to bend a bit on my previous estimations... Holyfield, Louis, young Ali would all be much better than who he actually beat. Johnson, also. I feel a hell of a lot more certain favoring him over anyone 190 and below.

38 years old in the last fight of your career = Washed up.

33 year old former middleweight-lighheavyweight with best days behind you= washed up.

37 years old on comeback trail and last fight of your career = washed up.

 

Unless Rocky Marciano fans need those fights for his legacy. In that case those guys are in the best shape of their lives!

 

In fairness they were in good shape and still able bodied with good credentials. But that doesn't necessarily mean prime. Those guys were at their pinnacle either in the 1940's or at lower weight classes, or in some cases both. Certainly not in the 1950's or at heavyweight. If it had been that same 32 year old version of Ezzard Charles fighting Mike Tyson in 1988 in place of Spinks the same result would have occurred. There'd be no battle of epic proportions which went the distance, caused split noses or led to a rematch... Ain't no way..

 

Dempsey would most likely have beaten him.

Just an awful stylistic match for Marciano.

 

I disagree. If Dempsey comes out sloppy and spastic Marciano has an excellent chance of icing him early.

If not, Dempsey burns himself out in a few rounds and Marciano disassembles him.
