The way his fans talk him up in head to head match ups, yet his resume and record wreak of mediocrity

I think he's overrated. There are some films in which he looks impressive, for sure, but his title reign was a dragged-out joke. He got away with not fighting the best of his day.

He is a greater entity than he was a fighter, that's for sure.

Still a great, I will not argue against that. But his name carries more import in boxing discussions than it really deserves.

Was it Burt Sugar who started the trend of putting him Top 10 pound for pound?

Because people have followed that, yes, yes he is.

He is such a revered fighter because he made inroads in boxing and knocked down a lot of doors to further the sport. If you think about it, he initiated the transition from the Jack Johnson era to the Joe Louis era.

Dempsey was a great. But yes, his record & quality of opposition, who he fought & did not...
Does not approach most all rated about as highly as him.

I think the mass media was so different 100 years ago it was far easier to FOOL mr expert boxing fan about the best of the best,,,

i think Dempsey was white, really exciting, hit really hard and thus could make a lot of people a lot of money.

Yes i think he was over rated but my grand-papi used to tell me to watch my mouth when i said that, he loved Dempsey but when listening to his stories about Dempsey i felt that a big part of why he loved Dempsey was the AURA of Dempsey. The story of him beating GIANTs gave every smaller man hope that size wasn't everything, which its not. However, it is something.

I think Dempsey would of always have been a great fighter, no doubt, just not as capable as other greats of other era's that's all.

    He might have been once.

On this forum, he is in vying for the tile of "most underrated".

yes, lol, see things can go back and forth so quickly when opinions are thrown around,,,,

he was a terror no doubt, from the video i have seen on him he was quick and had a great left hook and great right, plus he closed space on people with great timing :bbb

If the majority of the board spends more time discussing shortfalls of a fighter or his legacy rather than his strengths, it makes no sense to call him "most overrated".

These things are fluid. I concur with janitor that he may have been quite overrated around here before, but certainly not now.
