Marciano did not have great speed so few suprise shots that could have more effect than the pure power rendered.

He had a tremendous KO% though, 43 of 49 fights, citing the few he did not or when folks lasted against him only shows he was not the fastest KO guy, so yes, with his power & work rate, attrition & mucho power.

I doubt Dempsy was wrong that Marciano had more 1 punch KO power than him. Dempsey was better at quick KOs, but the competition & accomplishments of Rocky are somewhat better.

Marciano KO'd some crafty guys Walcott and Charles and Moore and took out the sluggers like 6"4 Vingo and 6'1 Layne more brutally so for one punch I give him the edge

Dempsey was more like Tyson with combo's, now Louis could do both but also mainly combo's ....Marciano had to work to get inside and did not always get the cleaner punches in so he punched arms, shoulders, neck and chest but when he landed clean he may have been one of the hardest one punch guys ever

Dempsey said Marciano was the hardest one punch fighter that he has seen, he said he needed a few punches to take a guy out, the same with Louis but he felt Marciano was the hardest puncher he had seen at heavyweight...quite a compliment from JD....he did not say who was better just that Marciano was the hardest puncher he had seen

Dempsey said the same **** about Max Baer (maybe correctly) and Lou Nova.

In this way, Jack is much like George Foreman.

Err hum, would you for once in your life try to read the thread titles before you jump in with both feet? It clearly says " one shot KO power " nothing at all to do with barrages of punches.

Personally I don't give a toss either way, but the thread title should be self explanatory.

In your obvious disgust for Dempsey, let me ask you this question...My favorite heavyweight Joe Louis in his prime hit the gargantuan stationary target Abe Simon with every punch in his ****nal for THIRTEEN rounds and finally the referee stopped the bout with Simon still on his feet protesting....Do you actually believe the Dempsey of Toledo in his prime would have allowed Simon to have lasted more than 2 rounds against a prime Jack Dempsey ?......A resounding HELL NO...If a Dempsey or a Louis
could hit you, they could finish you. Dempsey and Louis along with a young Mike Tyson were the best two handed ko artists
combining POWER and SPEED, a deadly combination.Marciano
who I saw ringside and training was a powerful attrition puncher
who missed half his punches, but his inhuman conditioning and stamina allowed him to punish his opponents terribly...Louis was the picture perfect heavyweight puncher whose likes we will never see again in the heavyweight ranks...A larger edition of
    Alexis arguello...

    "His hands were plastered!"

"His hands are made out of steel, he is wolverine, he is a cyborg of unbelievable destruction. He is robocop."

"A man simply cannot hit as hard as Dempsey. He hits near 8000 tons of force."

    "Oh my."

A Jess Willard quote shows that he would likely vote for Dempsey.

Waiaiaiat a minute. Something smells funny here.

So in 1919, Jess Willrad referred to Jack Dempsey as a "Cyborg", & even more impausibly, a "robocop"? :nono

That makes the other quotes suspect, even if legitimate.
When did those words even come into being?

Also, Willard claimed until the end of his long life that Dempsey's gloves were loaded.
I think he was wrong & had a gard time accepting defeat-& the damage he sustained was far oversated-but if he believed that it would impact how hard he though Dempsey actually hit.

Dempsey was quicker to get you, but even he admitted Marciano hit harder for 1 punch.

To show how hard Dempsey hit Willard until the end of his life believed Jacks gloves were loaded. He would show the broken bones on his face and state no man could hit that hard without something in their gloves. We know now via photos and eye witness testimony that Dempseys gloves were not loaded but he hit so hard that to his dying day Willard thought they were.

Great post, I've been saying all the time that Marciano was an attrition puncher whose unparalled condition allowed him to carry his power and attack all through a fight until his opponent eventually folded.:good
