Thing is, most sports have also retained their popularity or it has gotten more popular.
Boxing has become fully globalised (though at amateur level it always was) but the hotbeds of boxing have vanished and it's popularity has considerably diminished.

Does it not stand to reason then that as less and less folk are taking up the sport, that progression has either slowed or even stopped?

If there is any advancement at all now, it's come about through 'advancements' in PEDs, which allow fighters to take off or put on a lot of weight at a whim.

    Anyway...a topic for another time.

But he almost certainly would. He was a great, and with a modern diet and training techniques, added to advances in clothing, footwear and the track I am quite sure he would be competing for European, World and Olympic medals.

Indeed I would say it is ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

An ****ogy would be like saying Pele or Maradona could not hack it today in football. Laughable.

"Paavo Nurmi won 9 gold medals in Olympics"

"nowadays Nurmi wouldn't even qualify in Finnish National Championships"

But does this make the ordinary runners in their own day worth remembering or honoring over a man who won 9 gold medals?

This is the same question we can ask in America about the NFL. Would a team like the 1960's ******s who won five championships with the largest player about 260 lbs. be even able to compete with a bad 2014 NFL team. Probably not, but does that make the bad team of today good, and how relevant is it concerning the championship ******s who were the best of their time.

Just on runners though. Are they competing on a level playing field? Did Nurmi have the same quality shoes? Run on the same quality tracks? Have access to the same supplements to improve physical performance?

If not, is it even fair to compare?

Boxing techniques have regressed not progressed. Why? The lack of really good trainers. Too many amateurs posing as trainers. I see it in every boxing gym I visit. Level of expertise is so much poorer than 30 years ago.

The mods decided this thread you created was to be lumped in with all "generic" topics, which are found in this larger thread already stickied.
