Coetzee versus Dokes was a very good performance :

    This is embarrasing.

It's not racist actually. Some stupid B.S. about not being scared of a mouse.
Even now, Kallie would make a better fighter than singer, good Lord. :-(

It's terribly embarrasing seeing this sort of video. Knoetze was always the Saffer equivalent of a Hick or Redneck*. Only worse, as you can see.

Oddly enough if it WAS racist, he could have been arrested for hate speech. The country is obviously pretty touchy about that sort of thing these days.

    * We have them here unfortunately.

He also suffered fro brittle hands which plagued him big time .. I thought he was big, tough , good chin, brave but overall not that good .. the Spinks win was explosive but ridiculously rated in that Spinks was an absolute near amateur .. that win showed how pathetic Ali had become .. the talk of him beating Holmes is hilarious ..

Coetzee had serious power but lack of a top trainer until later in his career hurt hurt him. By the time Jackie McCoy got him he was somewhat older but he put it together vs Dokes. I always felt Coetzee would have had a chance against Holmes because of his right hand power, who would have thought 22 fight Reynaldo Snipes would have had Holmes down and it was the fight before that Gerrie had Snipes down 2X and was robbed by king

Gerrie was not consistent but he had serious power in the right hand. Like I said earlier Holmes was a better fighter but was down and badly hurt by a 22 fight Snipes right hand, why would it be hilarious if Gerrie could put him there, remember Snipes was on the floor 2x vs Coetzee in the fight before he fought Holmes ....i dont think Larry found it Hilarious

In Fact both Dokes and Coetzee were 2 heavyweights along with Page, Thomas, Tate and improved Weaver that Larry managed to avoid ....I think styles make a difference and a better fighter with a weakness can lose to a lesser fighter with the right strength

If there had been only one champion at the time, Coetzee is what you'd call a perennial contender. He was always winning and losing against the best. I had written him off and was shocked when he stopped Dokes. Got jobbed against Snipes, which would have been another nice name on his resume.

Dokes was actually pretty good. Nice handspeed and aggression.

"I'm a brave, brave mouse, and there's nothing that I am scared of"

The guy sounds like he had a klippies and coke too many to be honest. Looks like a family gathering of some sort.

He couldn't beat the WBA guy, so I doubt he would have greatly troubled Holmes.

He was a solid top 10 guy, but was lucky to catch the drug addled Michael Dokes on a bad night. I don't think Gerrie would have won any world title if not for Dokes' out of the ring problems.

He wasn't as good as Mike Weaver, who also was a good puncher and wasn't an Ali type. Mike beat him and Tate.

I disagree. Dokes looked strong and sharp against Coetzee. And Coetzee came within a whisker of cleaning Weaver's clock before gassing dramatically in the 13th. I reckon he would have given Holmes a rough day at the office, win or lose.

Maybe, I guess we have hindsight on our side. If anything I'd pick the Brewster defeat, as previously mentioned. Certainly more shocking, as with the use of hind sight, we can infer that Sanders would more than likely give Wlad problems regardless at what stage of his career he was at. Not to say Wlad wouldn't beat him prime for prime, but he has the power and hand speed, probably lacks the skills or stamina to give a solid 12 round performance though.
