I like Galento as well .. M. Baer, Jack Sharkey, the Godoy rematch, Simon rematch, B Baer rematch, Carnera ( what I can se of it ), Maurielo and of course Schmeling 2.
Louis had so many great fights, one of my top was Walcott II great finish and Conn 1 but Joe Louis always looked great chopping down the Big men and he fought many and they are always fun to watch Buddy Baer, Abe Simon,Max Baer, Joe was also the master of the rematch with Marciano coming in 2nd at heavyweight, and LENNOX LEWIS 3RD they always looked better the 2nd time around
I don't think anyone went the distance with Louis twice when he was prime. No Ted Lowry's on his resume.
Put it this way, the only fights of his I don't really enjoy watching are the ones where he was clearly aged and on the comeback trial. Prime Louis was a thing of beauty. The Baer fights, the Carnera destruction, the Schmeling rematch...all faves.
I enjoyed him dissecting the big guys: Simon, the Baer Bros, Carnera. Like Dempsey over Willard and Firpo, or Tyson over Ruddock and Bruno.
Has anyone seen him as referee in Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry in 1974? The amazing thing is that Joe Louis looks massive compared to both of them not just because he has put on weight but his height and reach in the ring look impressive. He does not look like a small heavyweight to me.
