Guillermo Rigondeaux: A Deeper Look Behind the Numbers, the Railroading of Rigondeaux

Rigondeaux is the worst treated Cuban defector I can remember.

I'm frankly shocked any more guys would even want to bother coming over after seeing what has been done to him.

How many have their been? Jose Napoles, Kid Gavilan, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Sugar Ramos, Florentino Fernandez, Benny Paret, Kid Chocolate, Jose Stable, Nino Valdez, Rigondeaux, Gamboa, Lara , Mike Perez, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Joel Casamayor, Odlanier Solis, Richar Abril, and who else?

He's made more than a million dollars. That's good money for most professions. Besides in Cuba, the average salary is $20 a month.

And has he really been treated worse than Packey McFarland, Sam Langford, Charley Burley, or Mike McCallum?

 

Um, loads more. Off the top of my head, just among active fighters, the entire Barthelemy family, for starters.

So what? He's considered by many to be among the greatest p4p boxers around today. He should have a lot more than one million dollars to show for that, considering how many guys there are below him but making oodles more. Danny fucking Green makes over double that per fight.

They aren't very big either, so I doubt they'll even make Rigo money.

That's not how it works. Rigo is already doing better than Ricardo Lopez did. P4p doesn't bring the money. There is a direct relationship to weight class and purse size. Bigger guys earn more. Contenders at the higher weights make more than champions at the lower weights. Donaire probably makes more money at bantamweight than any boxer in history and his highest purse was 1.3 million against Rigo when he was considered top ten p4p.

I had no idea that Danny Green made that much money. I can only assume it has something to do with him being a big man, from a wealthy country, fighting in his backyard, against a lot of fellow Australians, and managing to lure a couple of washed up stars into the ring with him. Rigo is a small boxer, from a poor country, fighting in a foreign land, against fighters of all nationalities, and has only managed to get Donaire to fight him.

Mark Too Sharp Johnson was in the p4p ratings for a while and didn't really make much money even though he was American. His purses were typically about 100 grand I think. Roman Gonzalez makes Rigondeaux money. I think he's made 700 grand for a fight before, but he just fought Sosa for 200 grand. I don't think Pongsaklek Wonjongkam made any more than that either. Khaosai Galaxy's Wikipedia page boasts that he often fought for purses in excess of $100,000 dollars in front of huge crowds.

No, I was just pointing out that it wouldn't be the first great fighter to be poorly served by the sport. And actually, I was sort of wondering about who their promoters were, or why they never got title shots or big money fights.

Of course, if they don't like it, they can quit and cure cancer.

Hard to make big money when you are not on tv. It has been that way since the late 70's. He has no fan base, sells no tickets, fight with a boring style and has been banned from tv. That is his own fault. I have long said he should just up his punch output by even 30% and it will make him a little more tolerable but he chooses to throw 15 punches a round and circle the ring. Boxing is a business and putting this guy on tv is bad for ratings. It is that simple.

I appreciate at least Rigondeaux can accept being the B-side though and generally will accept certain sacrifices to try and make fights with more marketable names in and around his division. To an extent the same is true of Ward which irks me about him, but however will never accept even 50-50 terms let alone B-side.


People need to look at it like this: if Justin Bieber is playing a concert and a little known but extremely good indie band are on the same show- who should get more money- Bieber because 99% of the audience bought a ticket to see him, or the indie band because they are 'very good'

Rigo vs lomachenko, santacruz, frampton, quigg would be awsome ppv. Whether you like it or not.

 

I would like to know how many people of those who say that rigo is unwatchable havent actually watched rigo vs amagasa.

Edit: And that's amagasa. Rigo vs quigg would be watched by 99% of this forum.

 

Even Loma isn't enough to make Rigo look 'exciting' and your comment about PPV is laughable won't even address that.

 

Oh I have no doubt the gullible Brits on here would watch Rigo vs Quigg. They after all are the same people that bought Haye vs Harrison. Either way Rigo isn't why they would be watching.
