Dmitry Pirog would have defeated Golovkin at (160)

Nah, big fan of Pirog but he wouldn't have. Pirog's style doesn't match up well with Golovkin, Pirog has a good defense but he still did get hit, and because he was offensively minded he'd be there to be hit by Golovkin all night, he's not a potshotter that's for sure. I don't think he's got the power to take out Golovkin but the same is not true the other way round.

Who knows, I would favor someone with a Gold medal pedigree, and fists made out of stone to outbox and knock out Martinez at whatever age..

I dont think its fair to either Pirog or GGG to assume either would have won the fight. They were both very very good, and they wanted to make the fight.

GGG beats any version of Maravilla, styles not fighters make fights and Martinez had almost the worst style you want to have facing off with GGG's style. It would have been a competitive fight though until too many heavy body shots landed. Martinez hits the canvass a couple times, and loses a wide UD IMO. That doesnt mean I dont rate Martinez very highly as a fighter, I just dont think he had a very good style to go against GGG with.

 

I've said this since immediately after the undeserved fascination came about...

Pirog is one of the most overrated boxers in the last decade. He just is.

A shame, too, since he was a good boxer and I liked the way he fought. He just never made anything of his world class career beyond one good win and a couple, at best, decent ones.

 

I made sure to watch all of his few fights live after he beat Jacobs. I respect Maciel and even faded MW Ishida, too. He just never did anything from his platform despite all the hopes and opportunity in the world. He certainly did not meet the expectations that everyone had for him. I wouldn't expect anyone to disagree with that statement.

 

I thought so at first, particularly after Golovkin appeared to have struggled against Ouma right when Pirog burst on the scene. In retrospect though I think Golovkin stops him. If you have to hold due to bodyshots against a junior middleweight like Maciel, I'd hate to see what Golovkin's punches would do.

 

That was my thinking as well, back when Golovkin was "new" on the scene and namely after his fight with Ouma I looked at the fight and didn't see anything impressive at all about him, Pirog however was coming off his very impressive performance against Jacobs and then his win over Maciel and he just seemed a better fighter at the time.
