One of 80's fighters that 'could've been, IF'.

Bert Cooper through his 28-year long career had so many ups and downs, but was always fun to watch.

He was a talented guy, but addicted to alcohol and drugs which shortened his prime and he was spent well before his 30th birthday.

Despite bad habits, Bert had good career with solid wins, won NABF title and challenged for HW titles twice (both times he gave tough fights).

Cooper's best wins are over amateur stars Henry Tillman and Willie Dewitt (both were undefeated at that time), CW contender Tony Fulilangi, CW world champion and HW contender Orlin Norris, HW title challenger Joe Hipp.

Cooper was known for his punching power. Oliver McCall said that Cooper is the hardest puncher of all he has fought or sparred with (including Tyson, Lewis, Bruno, Douglas). He was the first man to score a KD against iron-chinned Holyfield.

As for shortcomings, Cooper had a few:

    - Not dedicated, drugs and booze

    - His style was not effective vs big and tall fighters, Cooper simply hadn't style and syze to be competitive as was proven by Carl Williams, Bowe, Foreman and (later) Corrie Sanders

    - He wasn't the best finisher, he often had his opponents down and/or badly hurt (Tillman twice, Holyfield, Moorer twice and others) but couldn't finish the job.

Overall, he had a good career with great fights against Mercer, Holyfield and Moorer.

However, Bert's late career was poor and he started to lose more and more fights until he finally retired at 46.

Let's discuss Smokin' Bert Cooper and your favourite moments of his career.

His fight with holyfield was the first I seen of him and boy ol boy I couldn't turn away! More so of when holyfield teed off on smoking Bert with hellaish fury! It was like evander didn't respect this mans life at one point and Bert took those shots like a mofo man! It was a hellova fight which showcased combinations.. body punching..and the will to win like no other fight I've ever seen before! Smoking Bert's chin was re****ed! He lost...but I gave respect to that man!

Oh yes! Evander really tore his glove with the help of Cooper's chin, a rare case in boxing. One of the most exciting HW fights from 90's.

back in the day Willie Dewitt was a big thing for Canada because he won the Silver medal for us at the Olympics, well i loved Dewitt but i am a boxer and boxing fan so i knew he was in over his head against Cooper,,,Dewitt great guy but he was not a good pro. His hand speed was a bit too slow.

My Canadian friends jumped on his bandwagon so i won a lot of money betting against the home town dude even-though i liked him.

Cooper didn't let me down, he hammered Willie in the first few rounds with a amazing knock out.

My feeling was that Bert didn't really belong in the heavyweight division. He was stocky and if he'd been able to keep his weight down I think he could have terrorized the cruiserweights, but he was almost always at a significant physical disadvantage. I mean, so was Tyson, but I think Bert was naturally smaller than Mike.

Fun guy to watch, but I guess i never took him seriously as a heavyweight, always seeing him as more of a trial horse than a contender.

The video of Bert smoking Joe Savage is a gift that keeps on giving.

Cooper belonged in the Heavyweight division, he was 5-11 1/2 79 inch reach, and was in the 215-240 range, bigger than Frazier same as Tyson and roughly the size of Mike Weaver, dude was built like a tank, that's how he took so many shots..

I liked this dude, he was a blast, the Moorer duel, his brawl with Joe Hipp, and knocking Holyfield on his ass, then the brutal Mercer fight..

Guy underachieved because he was managed by some dumb a$$ Redneck who was a scumbag, and a thief, and of course last but far from least his love, and lust for booze and illegal narcotics, dude was a junkie..

I mostly agree. Not sure that he was really naturally much smaller than Tyson but he wasn't nearly as skilled, explosive, defensively sound, or fast as Tyson. He was too small and didn't hit quite hard enough for his style to beat top heavyweights.

This was the first Cooper fight I saw :

    [yt]XQdQMZQLDhQ[/yt]

    Very impressive.
But his next fight he was badly outboxed and beaten by Carl Williams.

That was a good win. Shame D'Witt couldn't pull it together to make better use of his potential, although he did have a respectable career.

I don't think he would have ever won a heavyweight title even if he had forgon the crack pipe and trained harder. He was too small.

However, I think he could have won a Cruiserweight world title, especially after Evander Holyfield vacated it, if he had been in prime shape.

As it was, he lost to Nate Miller and Everett Martin in 1988. I don't know for sure, but I doubt Cooper was in prime shape for these two fights.

A motivated, focused Cooper probably could have beaten guys like Robert Daniels, Bobby Czyz, an old Carlos De Leon. These guys did win world cruiserweight titles at around the same time Cooper could have done so.

I reckon the brutal fight with Mercer took some of the wind out of his sails. I'm surprised that both men didn't come out of hospital slurring their words. Cooper could punch, too. He's one of the reasons why I reckon Sanders had an alright chin. Landed some big shots on Corrie ...

In my opinion Cooper was one of those guys that just needed a small nudge from somewhere and they could have been somebody. Somehow, through watching him fight, I get the idea that he was a "good guy" at heart. Maybe he was short some ruthlessness to turn him into a terror.
