Quality over quantity. McCallum holds wins over Graham, Collins, Watson and Kalambay at middleweight. That's surely better than what Golovkin has accomplished at middleweight thus far. A strong case could be made that he beat Toney in both fights, especially in their second encounter. His other loss at middleweight was later avenged. C'mon, IB.

Toneys resume is better, he was up against a much higher level of opposition and he remained unbeaten at Middleweight. While Toney would breeze past GGGs opposition, we would see GGG lose his unbeaten record. Toney was a complete fighter whereas GGG is yet to fight a marquee fighter. Going up in weight and fighting Ward would show how good he really is. Toney would have gone up in a heart beat and given Ward all sorts of problems. Many agree that Ward would beat GGG by a wide UD.

I don't see Golovkin being undefeated in the late 80s-early 90s MW division. I think he would lose to Hopkins, Toney, Jones, and McCallum.
It's a hypothetical scenario with both guys being at their absolute best, fighting to their full capabilities. Yes, Toney had off nights when he fought so frequently, similar to what Eubank had during his hectic schedule. Toney had many non title, keep busy fights, where he fought every few months. Go and look at who Toney fought at MW? He fought peak versions of Michael Nunn and Reggie Johnson. He fought Mike McCallum who was still a great fighter. Who the hell has GGG fought who's anywhere near those levels??
In this hypothetical matchup, Toney is a 160 pound middleweight, not a heavyweight, so knocking out Toney is not impossible. If Toney had fought at 160 pounds at heavyweight he would have gotten knocked out. The extra mass you pack on helps you avoid being knocked out.
