Yeah, it should be a level playing field.

But if it's not a level playing field, if the champion has "earned" extra priveleges and rights, then that should be openly acknowledged and agreed upon (by fans as well as fighters) before the fight.

But, you see, it never is acknowledged or endorsed by the fans before a fight, because it sounds unfair, and it rarely occurs that a huge underdog beats the champion like that. It's only AFTER the fact, that some fans make these protests.

Of course, Vitali Klitschko is, to many, an exceptional case. He lost to Lewis and is treated by many fans to have been "robbed" of his "benefit of the doubt" or whatever, even though he was only the challenger.
If Lewis was the one who lost with the ripped open face, I dare say he would have got even more sympathy and protests too.
... and I don't even want to imagine what his own take on that would be. He was bad enough in victory.

All I can say is you have a very strange idea of a fighter " stumbling into the ref's chest " because that simply doesn't happen. I think the stoppage was fair, but as I said earlier the Mexican was very quick to do so. I wonder if he would have done the same had the boot been on the other foot?

I mean ffs look how many chances referee Lane gave McCall in the rematch when the moron was crying like a baby and mumbling nonsense to himself, before he finally stopped the charade.

The time of hitting the canvas has sweet FA to do with anything. It is when the ref sees the other guy is in a neutral corner, and starts the count that matters, NOTHING else.

    That's good then, surely.
A quick, decisive, FAIR ruling. No hesitation, no looking for outside opinions.
    Sounds like good refereeing. :good

Mills Lane got Lewis-McCall 2, Tyson-Holyfield 2 and Lewis-Akinwande all within a few months of each other.
He must have started to feel like a therapist more than a referee.

Smith was way too slow to trouble Lewis, it would be the Grant fight all over again. I don't think Smith was rated anymore when Lewis broke the top ten1991 he was 38 years old,he lost to 15-5-0 Levi Billups that year.

Smith was quite a cagey survivor. I don't think he'd ever go out like Grant, not if he was prime.

The alleged "duck" of Smith happened in 1990 though when Lewis was a novice, so it made sense.
