Not all banned substances are PED's (but all PED are banned substances, or should be)

I've noticed a trend in branding anyone that fails a drug test in boxing (or any sport) for a "banned substance" as being a PED cheat - or, even more lazily, painted with the brush of "steroids cheat", an even more specific term which doesn't cover the very broad scope of the reality of what "banned substances" in sport include.

Marijuana seems a cut and dry one to me, yet has sparked a bit of controversy here and there. IMO this controversy is stupid. Any claims that marijuana has pain-dulling benefits that outweigh the horrific risks that go along with being stoned while fighting (dulled reflexes and hampered gross motor skills, for instance...dehydration, etc) as you'd need to be to glean the pain-dulling benefits are ludicrous enough to dismiss offhandedly.

Then you have weight-cutting aids, such as diuretics. These are more of a grey area, in my opinion, and there isn't as clear a right and wrong. On the one hand, gaining an edge to cut weight and enjoy a physical size advantage is wrong. On the other hand, it really isn't the same as taking, say, anabolic steroids or anything else classified as performance enhancing drugs to directly impact your in-ring prowess in a manner that causes it to exceed the expected formula in a "level playing field" of your natural athletic talent x your willpower & craft. Taking a diuretic to cut weight you otherwise might not be able to cut on your own is against the rules, but should be viewed in a different light than what it commonly termed "juicing", as it actually is a different (and lesser - still wrong, but lesser) infraction than juicing. Much like committing petty shoplifting of a candy bar at the drugstore is still undoubtedly a crime, but isn't the same as raping & murdering an old lady.

Lumping all banned substances together is silly. People who are busted for actual PED use should be looked upon far more harshly than anyone caught using a shortcut to make a divisional limit...or someone that likes to get high in their spare time.

I like when Luca Paolini was unfairly pulled from the Tour De France this month midway because the results of an out of competition test came back positive for cocaine, is not like being coked up helps you perform.

Or that "gay bar champion" Hulk Hogan.

I heard the Sheikh is not doing well these days. He is pretty much confined to a wheelchair from what I heard. Pretty remarkable he has lived into his 70's considering the life he has led.

I haven't been keeping track since Howard exploited the hell out of his and dumped after he'd overstayed his welcome, like he does with most of the people in his show even Artie, but it doesn't shock he was having difficulty walking when he was going on Stern.

I love Terry but I think he's finally starting to go senile. The last time I saw him on Raw he told Mick Foley while cutting a promo on him, "I know why you humiliate me Mick Foley....why do you humiliate me Mick Foley" and then he moved on.

Anyone who think weed helps you fight better has probably never smoked pot, and certainly has never gotten into a fistfight after smoking pot.

I have heard the big problem with diuretics though is they can help mask serious PEDs. While I am not enough of an expert to know which, how much and what PEDs can be masked - the potential masking factor is why I have always taken them semi serious. Even though much usage is probably just to make weight.

The problem with the masking aspect is the near impossibility of proving it, which leads to a slippery slope of assuming anyone using something that COULD BE a masking agent IS guilty.

You definitely missed out on not getting into pro wrestling. ECW would have been right up your alley. Twenty lbs of muscle and you would have upstaged guys like Just(in)credible or Tommy Dreamer.

You have the type of personality that would also have worked well on the mic.

You and CST could have tagged up!

    Fair enough.

Also, another aspect you might think about including are substances banned for safety reasons. I remember arguing with some people on here before about that. Basically if the US Army or other govt body disallows use of something during training because of even a potential safety issue, all the athletic bodies have to ban it as well from a legal liability standpoint. Even if all it does it make your heart beat a bit faster for a little while.

IIRC the stuff Rios got busted for in Macao was one of those.

Just going to say this again:

The majority of athletes are on PEDs. You are naive if you think otherwise.
