Mayweather-Hatton. Should we give Hatton more credit?

Hatton did nothing in that fight but look mediocre. He was never an elite fighter, maybe an elite wrestler.

 

Nah you cannot say that.

Whether you like him or not Hatton landed punches on Floyd that 90% of his other opponents couldn't.

I personally don't like his fighting style but that doesn't mean I cannot respect him.

 

He easily deserves more credit. He performed extremely well and was actually in the fight. I know for a fact that almost all Mayweather fans(myself included) were a bit worried in the first few rounds as this fight was happening.

Hatton also deserves credit for taking on the #1 P4P fighters of his time. Sadly though, he rarely(if ever) gets credit for it. Fans nowadays complain about cherry picking yet are the first in line to praise a fighter for doing so simply because he keeps scoring wins. Hatton could have easily cashed in a lot more money in the long run fighting others but decided to give the public what they want.

 

Mayweather resorted to ducking below the waistline (cheating) throughout the whole of the fight and Cortez allowed him to get away with it, that's a fact, it's there to be seen in the video.

He was troubled by Hatton in the early rounds and couldn't find any other way to combat Hattons pressure. In the end it all worked out for Floyd who really shouldn't have needed that tactic in order to win. Floyd ought to have won that fight clean and without dubious tactics, he was/is way better than Hatton.

It's this type of **** from Mayweather that taints his rep, the true All time Greats don't do that and their legacy stands the test of time.

There's too many ifs buts and maybes surrounding FMJ for him to join the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Wilfredo Benitez, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and the like.

 

Give Hatton credit for what? Getting knocked out?

 

I think he generally gets credit as giving Money more trouble than anybody else in the past decade.

This he deserves.

If he had not been a glutton with alcoholic tendencies he may have had more in the tank to sustain that pressure on Money for longer, but he was, and couldn't.

Too bad for him.

If that ringpost hadn't been there to stop him he'd still be stumbling around area 51 in the desert to this day

All the holding and hitting from both sides, and the elbows from Mayweather, the rassling from Hatton, and ducking below the waist is the issue?

 

Mayweather using illegal tricks in the ring makes him no different than many other greats (and non-greats) throughout history.

In fact, it's the exception rather than the norm for a great fighter to not have some against-the-rules trick up his sleeve.

 

There's a vast difference between educated pressure and simply marching forward in an attempt to maul an opponent. Ricky Hatton probably got hit with every left hook and right hand Floyd Mayweather threw, if you want to give a credit to a walking punching bag go ahead, but I'll reserve my credit for someone else.

I think Miguel Cotto did a great job of pressuring Mayweather, as did Oscar Dela Hoya in the first half of their fight, Zab Judah did pretty goob job as well, and of course Jose Louis Castillo. All those men managed to pressure Mayweather without compromising themselves. Hatton pressured 'Money" but he ate nearly every punch thrown at him which was ultimately why he got knocked out.
