How did Iran Barkley manage to beat Thomas Hearns twice?

Broke Hearns' nose in the rematch too if I recall.

 

Really puts Duran in perspective. He was tiny compared to Barkley.

 

Barkley vs. Hearns II was close and could have went either way. Barkley dropped Hearns and won by split-decision but not too many would have said "robbery" had the decision went to Hearns.

Their first fight? Hearns was kicking his ass and then... BOOM! KO3 Barkley

I wonder if Hearns would have been able to do as well (as he did in the rematch vs. Barkley), if not better, in a rematch with Hagler.

 

Erm, perhaps it was his chin. Because Tommy was by far the better technician.

 

Barkley was an excellent fighter, Great double left hooks, had power and a warriors mentality.

The " Blade" was a very good champ. Hearn's got caught, it happens.

 

Hearn's Achilles heel was always his chin. Leonard, Hagler, and Barkley knocked him right out, which suggests that anyone with good power for a middleweight could do it.

 

Hearns was almost doubling Barkley over with those liver/body shots in the first fight...and damn near finished him.

I might be a homer but I always thought Tommy won the 2nd fight. I might I have to re-watch the fight, but I remember Barkley following Hearns around and getting plastered with jabs all night.

 

Very good champs are limited now?

Barkley was a great champ. Nothing less.

Hearns just wasn't good enough at 160 and 175 to overcome Barkley's style.

 

Leonard once told me that Barkley is the fighter from his era and weight classes he wishes he had a victory over.

beatable, Yes.... But only by equally fantastic fighters or ATG's.

I think he would have destroyed Leonard.

 

Hearns should have blown through Barkley. Barkley's unorthodox style and lack of fear of Hearns was Hearns's undoing. A previous post was spot on when the person said Hearns was pivoting to avoid a Barkley shot when Hearns actually went right into the path of Barkley's bomb. Hearns than momentarily was suspended for a split second before Barkley planted another straight down on Hearns face.
Hearns was in daze city, and landed flat on his back. Just like the Hagler fight Hearns did manage to stagger up, but by than we all knew it was over. Steele idiot should never have allowed the fight to continue. Hearns easily could have got hurt worse. (actually he probably did as Hearns sadly developed a bad slur from the epic Hagler/ Kinchen and Blade Wars) He was far superior than Barkley, however Barkley just had his number

 

Tommy could outbox anyone .Only fighters who came at him gave him trouble even SRL was behind on points and had to attack to win.
