Well, his KOs of Wilfred Benitez, Dave "Boy" Green and Pete Ranzany at welterweight; Ayube Kalule at super welterweight; and Donnie Lalonde at super middle/light heavyweight. Green and Ranzany were both top contenders (if not #1 contenders) for a number of years. The Green KO was one of the most brutal KOs of the decade.
The Andy Price/Boy Green ko's were epic....so was the scientific stoppage of Benitez..ah, throw in those Kalule and LaLonde ko's as well.....and BTW,...I met Donnie LaLonde's brother recently at a job I have. The guy's a truck driver, and when I discovered his last name, I asked, "like the boxer, Donnie LaLonde?" and he told me that he was his brother...and he seemed genuinely pleased and flattered that I knew of him...and that I'm a boxing fan!! Cool, huh??
Armando Muniz was also considered a big name opponent at the time, since Muniz was coming off his title challenge against Palomino. But it wasn't much of a contest.
Very cool where does his brother live. I believe Donny lives in Victoria,BC which isn't far from where l live. But regarding the fight l personally hated it, because SRL used his clout to dictate all the terms and Donny had to defend his 175 title while weighing in at 168.
I didn't like the Benitez stoppage, Padilla jumped in very quickly. It was still Leonard's best win outside of the big three.
His bro lives here in Jacksonville Fl ....we chatted quite a bit about the Leonard fight...his brother said he was still very proud of Donnie's performance..and he said, "what was he supposed to do, after all, it was SRL,...at least Donnie scored a knockdown, that was something to be proud of",....Donnie's bro seemed like a really cool guy.
Dominating and outboxing an undefeated Benitez so easily (I had him way ahead by the time of the stoppage), especially since so many fans still think of prime Benitez as a borderline unbeatable ring genius.
