Dempsey may have knocked firpo down 9 times but he also was floored 3 times himself. He was illegally helped back into the ring to prevent losing by first round knockout

Dempsey came closer to losing to firpo than Wills did

Not sure how legit this is (seems legit) :

    http://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/autographs-gene-tunney-unbelievable-racist-co-457-c-suhckp3zn1

Description: [ Autographs ] GENE TUNNEY Unbelievable racist content T.L.S. "Gene" on his business letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Stamford, Apr. 8, 1949 to his close friend Robert Gros in which Tunney sets forth his views on the inequality of the races.

In very small part: "...I have learned a great deal about the Negro problem since I have taken this job...the American Negro is no more like his African cousins...than we are like Neanderthal men. The American Negro, without exception, has a good infusion of white blood...[he] is a development of physical selection.Women slaves were serviced by men slaves, just as mares of the racetrack are serviced by great sires. This accounts for much of the physical superiority of the Negro...The intelligent man's objection tothe Negro [is based] on his cultural immaturity...[they] will be accepted by Americans just as soon as he proves his equality culturally and spiritually...Men are not created equal. Not one percent of the people of the world are gifted with brains enough to contribute to the progress of the world..." Near fine condition.

Gene Tunney, while world champion, did attend the funeral of Tiger Flowers.

His spoke : "When I think of Flowers, Kipling's line on Gunga Din keeps running in my ears : 'He's white, clean white, inside.' That's my tribute to a great fighter and a real man !"

    :think

While looking at numerous rolls of California newspapers on micro-film, I noticed that the number of black boxers fighting on boxing shows outside the South in the United States was comparatively low during the 1920s, especially during the early part of the decade. But the presence of black boxers in the United States seemed to increase dramatically during the late 1920s and early 1930s. With that in mind, I am not greatly surprised by the fact that Gene Tunney never fought a black fighter when his last bout was took place in 1928. But I am very surprised that Tommy Loughran never fought one during a career which lasted until 1937.

To be fair, Gene Tunney did pick Joe Louis to outjab a gorilla *

Although he did insist of having the gorilla wear different color trunks so he could tell them apart.

Yes, Tommy must have really made an effort.

He had over twice as many fights as Tunney too.
