Frank Bruno apparently punched at over 1400 pounds pressure..

" An oft-cited 1985 study of Frank Bruno, who'd go on to be WBC heavyweight champ, showed he could punch with a force of 920 pounds in the lab. Researchers extrapolated that to a real-life blow of 1,420 pounds, enough to accelerate his opponent's head at a rate of 53 g -- that is, 53 times the force of gravity."

Thoughts?

 

He should have been undefeated, then. For some reason, he wasn't. Maybe because opponents move and dodge punches........and hit back?

 

I think it's quite an extraordinary figure.
The reason I got reading about this stuff was that rising light-heavyweight Artur Beterbiev was measured in a fight as punching at 953 lbs of force by these new PSI measuring gloves they have now. I thought that it was a really high number for a light heavyweight.

 

Yeah I would bet Bruno would of been one of the hardest hitters especially on a non moving target :bbb

He had a difficult time connecting when he tried too hard :bbb

 

There is a youtube video where Chris Byrd is tested before & after abstinence, which proves the obvious that *** does not sap your strength.
Byrd I recall rtecorded almost exactly the same number as Bruno. Which sound unbelieveable.

I wonder about the accuracy of some of these tyests.
Also a sports science video showed how impressive a woman boxer was compared to a man. But in that case he basically jabbed while she through her whole body into it,
There is a big difference between a country fairgrounds type windup & trying to land a punch, especially in bunches, non-telegraphed in a fight.

But Bruno was one of the biggest bangers, absolutely.
He was a case where the punch force seemed to match his physique, a chiseled 6' 3" 247. This is not necessarily the case normally.

 

I can actually believe that. Insane.

 

Yeah I don't know how accurate these tests are either but it makes for fun reading.

I wonder if this will ever be implemented into live fight broadcasts. Not only could we see with hard cold data what sort of power fighters are generating but we could also see what fighters have iron chins or glass jaws.

 

These are extremely interesting figures.

I believe 953 lbs places Bruno well behind Bob Fitzsimmons and Sam McVey on the measured scale. i cant remember exact figures, but both were measured well over 1000 lbs. Bob was a light heavy or lower, but i think he may have retired when he was tested, i cant remember.

The figures are much, much lower than i would have expected from a modern skilled superheavy like Bruno. I am not sure how the figures are taken from 900 to 1400 but it sounds like Fitz and McVey would have started to approach Ivan Drago status with figures like this.

I do find this subject very interesting, because it is raw data which cannot be disputed. And more importantly, unlike running, swimming or other sports data, it shows that turn of the century athletes are on par with current athletes and there has been no great evolution of the sport, in terms of physicalities.

I also find it interesting that a light heavy, even today can hit close to as hard as a decent superheavyweight. I would ahve thought the superheavys were off the chart in terms of power hitting. Does anyone have any figures for any other fighters of various weights?

Wladimir Klitschko's test results on a crash test dummy (the kind they use to test automobiles, I think) was 700 kilograms. So 1480 pounds. I wonder how reliable these are, but I think that with Klitschko, you're always talking about a well-thrown punch instead of a telegraphed wild haymaker.

 

I would have to be persuaded that old-timers measurements are anywhere close to accurate, especially how easily this data could be manipulated to promote a fighter.

 

The average Hw today punches over 800..not sure what the measuring force is used by...updated punching machines had Cain Velasquez ufc former HW champ at 6'3 240 punching over 2000.I would say almost likely at 240 pounds himself Bruno would hit that 1500 mark easily.He may have been slow but had a punch to him.Punch force is hard to measure however as a real fight more variables are included such as timing,accuracy and how many punches were thrown,not every punch is going to be perfect.

I never have taken these tests seriously.

Tho I am sure Bruno hit very hard.

 

Why is it any easier today to manipulate data for promotional purposes than back then? If anything, it is easier and more important, since getting a title shot today is about building an 23 and 0 record and promoting yourself, rather than yesteryear when figthers fought a lot more and had to build a record by beating the name figthers.

I think the accuracy of the machines was discussed on an esb thread a few years ago.
