Why isn't Deontay Wilder famous/huge in America yet?

I want an honest discussion of this..

On paper, Deontay is a charismatic American KO artist who holds possibly the most prestigious belt. Quite similar to how Mike Tyson got national media attention after feasting on tomato cans.

So WHY is Deontay, by this logic not popular in America yet? Tyson by this point was a household name who was going on big talk shows.

My main presumption is that it's because Wlad is ''the man'' of the division, whereas Tyson didn't have to fight a dominant force. But there could be other reasons. Could Wilder's popularity change if he theoretically became undisputed champ?

    Discuss.

as I've seen someone post here before, the US public is very unforgiving when it comes to beating/raping women, Tyson got sentenced for **** after becoming champion, Wilder beat on hookers long before he fought Stiverne

    I disagree.

Mike Tyson is greeted everywhere he walks on the street; people ask for autographs and selfies with him even to this day. Worldwide. His r@pe conviction hasn't really changed that.

Alabama does; but he's not a household name across the whole country. Tyson was.

My main theory is that it's because he isn't marketable as a great heavyweight yet because Wlad is a dominant force and seen as the 'true' champion, whereas Tyson had to beat obscure paper champions for his belts.

I predict that if Wilder becomes unified champion and fights on national TV (he said in an interview he doesn't want to fight on PPV), then he could be huge.

Wilder needs to have a Fight of the Year type of war in order to get the cred. He's not a big name yet because no one knew him fighting bums and no one knows him now because he's still fighting bums. There needs to be that one OMG fight in order to get the people talking.

cause everyone can see that he is not a great fighter. he hits hard, but that will only take him so far. also, the little gimmicks he uses to market himself are just generic copies of those who could actually pull those gimmicks off.

Well, let me see, 34 fights into his career Mike Tyson had defeated James Tillis, James Smith, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tucker, and Larry Holmes. 34 fights into his career and Deontay Wilder has only beaten Bermane Stiverne. Mike Tyson was 22 by the time he'd done this and Deontay Wilder is now 30.

Deontay Wilder isn't the second coming of Mike Tyson. He's the second coming of Shannon Briggs. In order to gain Tyson stature, Wilder would have to beat Klitschko, Povetkin, Fury, Pulev, and Jennings in quick succession.

Dumbest thing his team did was not fight every month.

One of the main reasons Tyson became so huge is he fought often so he added to his fan base constantly. Ggg took advantage of this model in the new era.

Wilder should have been fighting constantly. He was never going to lose to b competition so there was no glass chin worries. 2014 and 2015 have been a disaster for his brand based on his work rate and who he has faced.

Wilder is a paper champion and even US fans know this. I don't think he is charismatic at all, the whole bomb squad thing is stupid. The dive by Scott also left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. US fans are not yet ready to jump on the bandwagon of a guy who has so many critics. Wilder as a champion has done nothing to suggest he will go onto have a glittering career.
