That would make Shavers his boss. Listen, your only argument is that Shavers never knocked out anyone over 230 lbs. It doesn't mean he couldn't. His skills put Briggs' skills to shame. Size is not matter in this fight, especially when you have a fighter who is more proven at beating better heavyweights than Briggs and his 1 win over Liakhovic.
Aha, just visited boxrec and Shavers DID beat a 231 lb Roy Williams. Your only argument just fell flat on it's face with one leg to hop on.
Wow one fight with a real HW..impressive.yea I guess Shavers totally crushes briggs now, forget the one round wreckage of Quarry and the Cobb embarrassement!atsch P.S Norton had a glass chin to thats the ONLY HW at 205 that shavers defeated that was actually decent!
I can't pick with any certainty. I thought Briggs at first, but I think Shavers would probably take it. Briggs almost reminds me of Golota. He loses almost every big fight in his career.
Better than ANYTHING Briggs ever did. Oh and have you checked out the quit job Briggs landed against Darrol Wilson? Talk about embarrassing. See ya! :hi:
uncletermite, do you know that Briggs was KO'd by Wilson early, got dominated by McCline 99-90, got schooled by Botha only to get a gift draw, got beaten by 8-8-0 Cedrick Fields. Let's talk about Briggs abilities, not Shavers'
These guys are the same level for me. They lost most of the times they stepped up, and to some they had no business losing to, but managed to be in the right place at the right time for their power to nab them some noteworthy wins. The primary difference is that people here tend to give Shavers way more credit for losing, as though Holmes and old Ali were the only ones who beat him. Toss up fight; well done by the OP.
The first and one of the few times I've ever sat down to watch Shannon Briggs fight was back around 1996. HBO had a heavyweight hopeful card which featured David Tua vs John Ruiz, Andrew Golata vs Donell Nicholson and Shannon Briggs vs Darroll Wilson. Briggs was highly touted at the time so I was eager to see what he could do. He went out there and got his butt kicked by a guy I had never heard of before nor ever would again. After that I pretty much lost interest in him. As for Earnie Shavers? Well he certainly had his fair share of both notable and less favorable moments.. Both of these guys were erratic and unpredictable. Earnie Probably probably has the slightly better resume but not by much. And Shannon has the size advantage. Both hit like trucks and both had shaky chins. So who wins? Take your pic. I wouldn't bet money on either of them.
You're right. Hard to pick a winner. Some guys just overrate Briggs like he was the next big thing only based on fact that he hurt Lewis. So what? He's got a beating, and was stopped in the 5th.
shavers never remotely beat anyone like McCline,a huge 6'7 super HW,he would have got his glass jaw shattered, you can give credit to loses in EVERY fight he had to Briggs but one i'll stick to reality and take a guy clearly on video footage who was way more skilled. You even suggested ANCIENT Ali was somehow awarded a gift win over shavers like that was proof of shavers talents?:hi:
Wilson was undefeated at the time Briggs fought him,it certainly beats losing to a guy who had 25 losses prior to fighting him and couldn't punch a hole through a wet bag though doesn't it? If you want to talk about Briggs abilities how about fast strong crisp boxing overall vs sloppy slugger baseball like throws for starters, shavers is outsized skilled and out toughened here.
People are too rough on Earnie in my opinion. There are A LOT of people out there who think he edged Ali...maybe not the majority, but a very significant minority of which I am one. Earnie also could easily been credited with knocking Ron Lyle tfo, but fighting in Lyle's hometown they weren't going to go with any easy stoppage. Shaver's knockdown of Lyle was just as severe as McCall's over Lewis....he just didn't get the stoppage. To say his career is filled with failure is an unfair overstatement.
Considering that Briggs never actually outboxed anyone noteworthy in his entire career, I think Earnie might pull that off he stuck to a strict gameplan. If it's bombs away, Briggs had the more reliable chin but I still wouldn't have too much confidence in him.
