    BINGO MC !
Luther McCarthy was possibly the heir to Jack Johnson as he was considered "the greatest white hope" in the heavyweight division.
McCarthy had everything a heavyweight needed except Luck. In 1913 he was fighting the Canadian Arthur Pelkey when a light tap crumbled him to the canvas, and he died there and then. An autopsy determined the cause of death was due to a fall from a horse weeks before. McCarthy was but 21 years of age...
There is a famous and eery photo of Luther dead on the canvas with a beam of light from above shining on his dead face..
    Someone has it. :good

Well he didn't die in the ring as such but of any boxers who died at that age Darcy is by far the greatest. He did die because of an injury he got while fighting in the ring.... caused his blood poisoning,,,,, what was that injury ?

Prior to the McCarty v Pelkey fight the then champion Jack Johnson was in exile, Johnson offered Pelkey's mentor and promoter ex champ Tommy Burns a deal in which he would come to Canada and defend his ttile against McCarty.Burns turned him down because his meal ticket was Pelkey.

Obviously you can never say what would have happened, but the prognosis was more than promising.

I don’t think it is a stretch to say that he would have been better than Jess Willard.

Comparable to Dempsey is a bit of a leap of faith, though it is not impossible.

I could actually see him maturing into something similar to Harry Wills.
