Let's be clear: Toney does not belong in the same ring than Tarver at this stage of his career. Losing to journeymen for whatever reason does not qualify him for anything. In a wide open hw picture he could have had a shot against Tarver providing a few wins against 2nd tier opposition. This is just a disaster and should convince James to call it quits.
Lets be honest. He sounded and acted punch drunk even in his prime. Sure, he loses some brain cells every fight. But I'd imagine not too many since there aren't many left to get knocked around.
Toney losing to that Ellis guy is a total disgrace, how on earth could that happen? Toney just needs to get in shape now and put things right. His reflexes aren't there anymore, but I believe that when he's in shape he'd have enough left to beat 2nd tier guys like Ellis or Gavern... It's time for James to correct these blemishes on his record. Yeah, I know, he might as well retire, and that would be the better option, but we all know that he's a born fighter who just won't do that... he's too proud, stubborn, and maybe stupid too. He'll never quit and probably end up severely brain-damaged, and that's a sad thing for him as a person and bad for the sport, but it is what it is. It's his own health. He continues to step into the ring, and he might as well do it seriously and have a couple decent wins. Toney should rematch Ellis and Gavern to get back into the mix. In todays weak HW division that should be enough to get ranked among the top 30-40. Why not make a HW tournament then, with veterans like Tarver and Briggs, Toney, Tony Thompson, Razor Ruddock... the winner could face Deontay Wilder to find out who the real american HW champ is.
The last notable win of Tarver was Clinton Woods in 2008  I highly doubt Tarver would even beat Toney at this stage.
Johnaton Banks would win 10-11 rounds vs Toney, Cunningham wins by shutout. Tarver destroyed Banks, and imo he beat Cunningham as well. Toney lost to Ellis, a guy that Tarver would probably knock out in 3 rounds.
Cunningham is featherfisted and couldn't land anything clean. Tarver saw all his punches coming and made Cunningham wobble twice in the fight. Tarver was in control all night. A win for Tarver was correct, but I can agree with a draw as well. But no way Steve won that fight.
Johnathan Banks was a part time boxer, the time Tarver fought him. Cunningham is a 40 year old cruiserweight . Both are past prime cruiserweights. Contrary to Tarver, Toney fought real heavyweights of quality. (Ruiz, Rahman, Holyfield, Peter 2X, Oquendo, Guinn, Browne). Tell me one heavyweight of note Tarver has beaten? In fact, Tarver's last notable win was against Woods 7 years ago. :deal
Tarver beats Browne. And yes, Matt Legg, Jason Gavern en Charles Ellis are real heavyweights of quality He lost against two of them. Sheppard, Banks, Cunningham >>>>>>>>>> Legg, Gavern, Ellis
