I was thining about this match up today.. Personally I think Tex Cobb's good chin and pace would lead him to victory. I see Briggs putting on him good in the early rounds. Cobb keeping up with him and as the fight goes on Cobb would continue his pace while Briggs would slow badly. Eventually Cobb would overwhelm Briggs and get the KO.
I don't see how in the world you could pick Briggs. Dokes, Weaver and Shavers all drawn into prolonged firefights with Cobb, but Briggs would somehow get him out of there? And if the fight doesn't end early, Briggs' terrible stamina would surely cost him.
Does Briggs have a single good performance that isn't an early round blowout KO?* And he'd be fighting the guy who is one of the worst possible opponents if this is your path to victory. *he has the draw vs. Botha and the gift decision against Foreman, from what I can see. Perhaps he did alright vs. Botha.
He almost k.od lewis in round one,and was very fast and overall skilled...he would defeat shavers or Dokes. He also fought foreman with one hand,he broke his hand in round 2.Briggs speed would k.o cobb, again nothing I see on film suggests he was skilled at all.
He lost to Botha pretty clearly. Botha outboxed Briggs and had him hurt a few times. Briggs scored a KD in 8th. I've scored the fight 96-92 for Botha.
Although I pick Briggs here, I'd never say he was very skilled. McCline outboxed him easily, 99-90 on all cards. Old Foreman who struggled with Savarese and clearly lost to Shulz beat Briggs but was robbed. Botha beat Briggs clearly but was robbed, too. Briggs had nice power, decent skills, good handspeed but an awful timing and bad defence.
maybe if Cobb had gone into boxing instead of acting first he could of been way better, hard to say, certainly he was one of the few ever to have relative success with such a late start ??? Anyways, at their best I would take Briggs, maybe not by knock out but at least by UD
Briggs would pummel him. The "firefight" with Dokes is an exaggeration; Dokes dominated, despite Tex still attacking til the final bell. Shavers was old and coming off of two brutal knockouts. Briggs would have a good height and reach advantage and would have more than enough power to make Cobb respect him.
the past prime dokes that fought holyfield would stop shannon briggs ............. dokes of 89 would never get kod by darrol wilson
