No to Floyd-Berto. Yes to the others.

 

In a perfect world that's how it should be, but with HBO's budget only a fraction of what it used to be, they're relying on PPV buyers to subsidize their costs. At least for GGG-Lemieux, you won't risk your buddies getting a dud action wise and the undercard is quite strong.

Most big promoters are pretty vocal about undercards not mattering and routinely put on weak ones accordingly; I hope this PPV is a success not only as a Golovkin fan, but as a fight fan whose tired of seeing lame undercards. Hopefully this can start a new trend. If they're going to kill us on PPV, we should at least get a good card all around for it.

 

Rummy I don't see how they are backing the wrong horse. HBO has made Kovalev the star he is today. They gave him a pre fight show for the hopkins and Pascal fights, plus a feature show to introduce him to fans. He just hasn't had a PPV quality opponent yet. And his popularity isn't as high as GGG's with fans. Not to say that David L. is a PPV quality opponent. It's just the only way to give David what he wanted to get in the ring.

HBO is clearly all-in with Kovalev. And if Ward is willing to step up, that fight will surely be promoted as a PPV. And I also don't think beating a 49yo Hopkins isn't a career defining win. But GGG and Kovalev are clearly HBOs two biggest stars outside of maybe Canelo because I think Manny is done.

I'll but Cotto/Canelo, and I have tickets to GGG. No to Berto/Floyd

 

GGG vs Lemiuex I guess is a mismatch but who at 160 isn't?

Floyd and Manny made a killing off of PPV mismatches

I agree its not Hagler vs Hearns but its definitely not going to be a blow out like Tyson vs Spinks

At best its like Canelo vs Kirkland or at worst a replay of his Stevens fight where he takes away a punchers ****nal and then systematically cuts him down

 

He was 22 years old and still green, he was outboxing them before the stoppage anyways.

Anyway, I'm one of the saps that will buy all 4 (not sure on Mosley-Mayorga, I may just catch the PBC card live and skip it)....I think the GGG and Cotto-Canelo fights are very solid. The Mayweather fight IS terrible but has some good stuff on the undercard. Mosley Mayorga is a bad joke but is kind of appealing with the circus sideshow atmosphere. It's like if Butterbean came out of retirement to fight Tyson Fury....just bizzare, unwanted, but a trainwreck that I'm tempted to watch.

 

Yeah, it used to be that the fight was pay per view. Now it's the fighter who's pay per view.

 

GGG and Lemieux actually shouldn't be a PPV fight and I'm not buying it. He knocks outs a bunch of bums and now he wants people to pay and watch him. Not me. Cotto/ Canelo is PPV because they are two evenly matched quality fighters with a two big fan bases who wants bragging rights and a championship is also on the line. Old vs the new, Rican vs Mexican. It's major drama and these two gents will never fight again. It's worth the money. Mayweather and Berto. That's a no brainer. One of the most gifted fighters in the last two decades is hanging them up and this is his farewell fight. It's the end of a dynasty and history in the making. I wouldn't care if he was fighting Daffy Duck I'm buying it for the historical value. Plus it's actually gonna be a good fight.

 

Between the 3 I'll probably get cotto-canelo&may-berto, Alvarez-Cotto is the biggest fight in boxing. May-Berto is the last fight in an ATG's career, no offense but the GGG fight isn't PPV worthy and Lumieux P4P isn't better than Berto and ppl are basing that fight so I'll pass.
