Maybe with another ref he'd have scored a ko8 victory.

But his biggest problem that night was Douglas had a great game plan and stuck to it.

The way they Douglas fought that night, I don't think any version of Tyson beats him.

Given an immediate rematch, and based on how Tyson beat Ruddock whilst Holy beat Douglas, I'm fully convinced Tyson avenges his loss, but prime for prime Douglas was too good for him.

Very aggressive aren't you! I don't have to research all those things about other fighters, I already know them. Do you think I was born yesterday? You're like a child. This thread is not about all those other fighters and any distractions they might of had it's about Mike Tyson and his distractions. You've got something wrong with you attacking people and being a smart **** just because someone might dare to say that Tyson had distractions leading up to that fight. Grow up will you! We're all entitled to air our views and have a debate about it. Have you read what I did say about Tyson and his problems and Buster's as well as it happens and how they handled it?
What are you saying that anyone who might dare to talk about Tyson's state of mind at that time is a Tyson nuthugger and looking through rose tinted glasses? You obviously got a problem about Tyson being a ****** and therefore can't talk about his boxing career. Some of us can take that in and talk about his boxing career.

What a ridiculous comment to post by a grown man. I was reading through the thread and then read that, it stuck out. It wasn't in line with the adult conversation that was going on. It was like something that a young brat might say. Why would anyone on here think or suggest that Tyson is the only fighter to have ever had distractions? Why would you even think that anyone was suggesting that?

Oh by the way, It's official!

    The irony!

Isn't that the excuse people use for his loss to Foreman?

Excuses get overused for some fighters, and underused for others.

If Jack Sharkey had an army of delusional fans, who focussed on his winning streak, and made excuses for his losses, he might be seen differently today.

Even so, Tyson clearly lost the plot before the Douglas fight, and became a shadow of his former self.

You can take that as an excuse, or you can take it as an argument that he was never that good, it is up to you!

Prime Douglas was not too good for Tony Tucker, Mike White, Steffan Tangstad or Jesse Ferguson. He got KO'd by David Bey who was making his pro debut. Tyson beat better fighters than Douglas, including several who had defeated or went on to defeat Douglas.

Douglas gets horribly overrated based on beating an awful version of Tyson, a performance he never came close to matching over the rest of his career. Tucker or Bonecrusher would have beaten the Tyson who showed up in Tokyo IMO.

I don't rate Douglas that highly, I just don't ever see Tyson besting him at his best.

Plus you make a lot of excuses for Tyson and none for Douglas.

What excuses did I make for Tyson? Douglas was no better than various guys Tyson beat. He didn't bring anything special to the table that Tyson hadn't already handled; tall talented fighter with a good jab. The worst Tyson up til that point nearly KO'd the best Douglas. A better Tyson finishes the job.

Good post. Really simple, isn't it?

Tyson went off the rails rather quickly after Spinks. He looked horrendous in the Bruno fight. NIght and day compared to his earlier form. But Douglas was in the zone and firing on all cylinders. And again, some of it had to do with Tyson not in peak form.

By saying it was the worst possible Tyson against the best possible Douglas. It's just nonsense.

Douglas did bring something Tyson had never dealt with before because he was able to knock him down and out.

Can you point me to a fight where Douglas looked better? Can you do that for Tyson? A journeyman fighter had a great night and beat a much better fighter who was unfocused and underprepared. Not the first or last time it's happened. Best to best Tyson beats Douglas just like the best Robinson beats Turpin.

Seriously, guys; we need to do somerhing about all those "it is not Tyson's fault" threads.

Tyson is the shoulda, woulda, coulda of the boxing world.
He lost and that is it. Stop making Excuses for him.

Well, there are certainly Tyson fans who excuse him from the Douglas loss. I'm not one of them. And I do make the case that he wasn't at his best for that particular fight, which I use not to defend his poor performance but to point out the facts surrounding the fight. We don't truly know if Tyson was banging geisha girls before the fight, or even weeks up to the fight. We do know that Tyson went on a crash diet to appear in fighting shape. There's been documentation and statements from his sparring partners (Page, McCall and Berbick) that he was cutting corners in training.

Anyways, it happens with the human race in any profession. But to say Douglas had Tyson's number and always would is debatable.
