I rate him pretty highly. After some early losses he rallied and put together a nice title reign, taking care of tough people like Ray Leonard and John Mugabi along the way.
A good fighter with some very obvious flaws (weak chin, lack of discipline) that could look spectacular. I don't think he was great but he was very, very good and one of the better offensive forces of the '90's. Top 10 at 154.
Exactly as I see it. It's a shame he was never matched up with Julio Cesar Vazquez or even Pernell Whitaker.
naturally he gets a little over rated because of the job he did on a older SRL :bbb he was out speeding a slower SRL and that had never happened before so it was quite shocking
I watched him from the start of his career. He was lightning fast, had exceptional boxing skills, and one punch power in both hands. I thought he would beat Jackson but Norris liked to fight and got caught. He took out Steve Little with one right hand, as pure a one-punch no as there is and that was the only time Little was ever stopped. Check who he fought. Norris had issues caused by him wanting to fight; DQ losses and flash knockdown. But when he was on his game he was a hard fight for anybody at 154. Though I have trouble seeing how he'd beat McCallum.
He was very good, not great. Mediocre chin was his main draw back. Biggest wins over washed up Leonard, Curry and Mugabi. Bad losses to Julian Jackson and Simon Brown.
Yeah, definitely not great. Norris wanted so badly to be in the P4P mix of his era. Everyone was either Whitaker or Chavez those days and I think for a while, Terry was the #3 guy. He wanted to be #1, which is why he called Chavez out many times and got frustrated when neither Pea nor Julio were interested. Norris after all was a lot bigger than either. So he had to settle for good, smaller fighters moving up. I think he had something of an attitude problem, and I wasn't sorry at all when Brown sparked him. Very capable fighter though, but as said, a bit chinny. He also thought he was a power puncher when he wasn't.
A great imo. He had it all maybe minus an iron chin. He has some poor losses but most greats do. He was probably a little small for 154 too, may have been better boiling down to WW
Complete different levels and Prime Zab is underrated. I think you're comparing their KO losses and speed. So some similarities. But Norris would probably beat Mayweather even if he was the same size, he was kryptonite to pure boxers.
If you want to watch a really fun fight, watch his bout with Donald Curry. A real closet classic. Curry wasn't the force he once was. He was definitely not the same fighter anymore after taking that bad KO from McCallum. But still, although the reflexes were eroding and the punch resistance was gone, he got in there and traded some intense bombs with Norris. Just a damn good fight.
That's a good post. My opinion he never beats McCallum and he was chinny but I agree with everything else. He was a warrior with a great killer instinct.
Can anyone tell me why after looking amazing in the Simon Brown rematch he spent his next 4 years fighting bums?
He looks amazing, yeah easy to be hurt and all but a greatly skilled fighter with a lot of natural ability.
