I can't really rate it to highly on Tito's resume to be honest but I do think it reflects somewhat well on Whitaker.

Pea was certainly on the decline before well before Tito and even before Hoya.

The yayo was taking it's toll and his focus wasn't there anymore. He was very poor against Rivera and Hurtado.
I know he turned it around big time for the Hoya fight but it was nearly 2 years and many rails between that and Tito.

Given his reflex based defense he was always going to struggle once he slowed down. That's why I got mad respect for Pernell for this fight, even though the tools that made him so dominant had been blunted he was still under all that a fighter. He was in there with one of the most dangerous Welters in history, bringing a knife to a gun fight and still had a real crack at it.
I don't hold anything against Tito, he did what he had to do and was dominant but for me Pernell Whitaker EVENTW over Felix Trinidad.

Been ages since I've watched it, but it doesn't change the fact he wasn't the same. Not shot but not the same. He was old, had failed 2 drug tests for cocaine which cost him a win and a shot at Quartey and had been to rehab.

It's still a good win for Tito, one of his best at the weight, but that wasn't Whitaker at his best with him that night. I do remember the ease with which Tito landed the right hand when he got in close, it was a punch that he was open to when he came in and he should have seen it coming as it was the obvious punch he was open to, yet he got caught with it time and again, prime Pernell wouldn't have been caught with that shot at all, even the one that faced Oscar would have slipped most of them.

You would have to be a blind man to think Tito won that fight.

I dont think hes ever watched the fight and most likely researched the fight to make himself somewhat educated about it... And hes just biting other peoples words, i doubt he even knew about his coke rehabilitation..

Man, have you even seen the fight? Trinidad barely landed a meaningful punch the ENTIRE fight. Tito had awesome power, so where was the bruising and cuts on oscar? Quartey landed and did more damage to oscar than tito did, HELL EVEN Stevie Forbes did more damage to Oscar than Trinidad did. There was virtually no damage to oscar's face because Tito couldn't land his left hooks. Yet tito's face -- eye was swollen, nose busted and bleeding all over this shorts. Its also why if you watch any highlight of this fight is 80% oscar landing on Tito, 10% Tito landing on oscar, and other 10% is Oscar making tito miss all night!
As for the rematch, get your facts straight. Tito priced himself out of it wanting 60% when oscar was BY FAR the main draw and the vast majority of fans thought he was brutally robbed and easily beat Trinidad. As if Oscar was going to take 40%, GTHO here with that.
Oscar dominated 8 of the first 10 rounds and won the fight 116-112. trinidad couldn't land more than one punch at a time, usually just a jab, but Oscar destroyed Tito in the jab department, overall punches and power punches by 100+ more. How anyone can have Trinidad winning that fight for doing absolutely NOTHING is absurd. Oscar landed way more, landed the best shots of fight and simply did more damage.

How does that even make sense? Oscar's own corner told him to stay away and oscar followed their instruction the last 2.5 rounds. If Oscar thought the fight was close, he would have closed the show. Think about it, just look at the quartey fight. Ike did way more damage to oscar than Tito did and put oscar down, so oscar OBVIOUSLY felt more power from Ike than he did Tito. To actually try to rationalize this to say a fighter like oscar is scared when he's gone toe to toe in much tougher fights, is ridiculous. Oscar would have went right at Tito had he thought there was any chance tito was going to get the W. Oscar didn't mind sticking his chin out when he needed to and he had a better chin than tito anyway. If those 2 actually went toe to toe, Oscar was faster and could have cracked Tito's chin alot sooner than vice versa. But the fact is, oscar had outclassed tito for the first 3/4 of the fight and with proper judging, there's no way without a KD that tito should have been able to win, and going toe to toe was the only way that may have happened.
This is also why Oscar started some petition after attempting to allow fighters to see the scorecards going into the last 3 rounds of a fight, so they don't get screwed over like he did.
Also, this fight is usually always ranked in the top 5 worst big fight decisions in boxing.

Whitaker was obviously past his best but I agree that he made Tito work for all the success he had in that fight. He seemed determined to put up one last, great performance. Pea also showed a solid chin and tremendous toughness to go the distance (with a broken jaw) against a prime, hungry Trinidad.

Whitaker was using all of his knowledge and tricks and that performance would have been enough to beat a lot of good Welterweights but Tito was an animal at that point.

I do think it's am underrated win for Tito, especially considering he was the first fighter to dominate Whitaker.

You must be a blind man to not see the chunky punches landing on Oscar and the effect it was having on him.

The judges did and that's why they and many other people had Trinidad rightfully winning.

Of course I've seen the fight, did you? I've studied this fight and came to the conclusion that this was a bigger beating than most give it credit for.

Oscar simply couldn't deal with Trinidad's punching power, which is why he RAN the last 3 rounds. He and EVERYONE in the world at that time knew that Trinidad was the most dangerous in the championship rounds. That's where he got his knockouts. Oscar felt Trinidad's punches and it had an adverse effect on him.

If you studied the fight carefully then you'd know that.

Let me try to write it in a way you can understand.

    Trinidad hits hard.

Oscar never had a glass heart until that night.

Oscar never pursued the rematch despite Trinidad more than welcoming the idea.

It was a PR vs MEX match up. Oscar is the same guy that brutally beat up Chavez Sr. twice in a toe to toe war to prove that he was the best Mexican fighter of all time. Once he met Trinidad and felt his punches, they ruined him forever. After this fight Oscar was NEVER the same again.

From being a great, to meeting Trinidad, being Tito'd, and never being the same fighter again.

That's simply just how hard Trinidad hit. He ruined fighters. Look at the long list, I don't have to tell you, you should already know.

Dude your completely delusional. Oscar was never the same? He had an epic war with Mosley the very next fight practically and took way bigger bombs from him than trinidad ever came close to landing. As for Chavez, oscar only went toe to toe with him in the rematch because of criticism from the fans for oscar easily outboxing him in the first fight.
And Funny how you're not recognizing that Trinidad asked for 60% of the purse, knowing full well oscar was the main draw. You think Floyd would take 40% for a rematch with Pac, especially if the vast majority of fans thought he was royally robbed in the first fight? Come on, get real.

And great, Trinidad hits hard, but when was he landing big shots? How often did we see oscar's head snap back? Oscar's unscathed face was proof enough of tito not landing anything significant. If Stevie forbes can damage oscar's face, how the hell couldn't trinidad!? Who hits twice as hard!
But It was amazing how easily Oscar was able to make Trinidad MISS, all night. Even in the rounds Oscar was running, Tito was still not landing much at all. Yet Tito's head was snapping back repeatedly round after round, Oscars JAB ALONE did more damage to Tito than tito did with any punch to oscar. But add in the beautiful 4-5 punch combo's oscar was mixing in there a few times a round, Tito didn't stand a chance. Boxing comes down to who lands more leather and who lands the better shots, not grazing shots or blocked shots. Oscar CLEARLY landed the cleaner, more effective punches and basically doubled Trinidad's landed.
Another great stat they showed during this fight, was Trinidad normally landed at a 45% connect approx, but up until around round 8 or 9, Tito was only landing at at around 25%!
And oscar averaged about 45% also, and was 45% this fight! Which again just cements how dominate Oscar was the first 3/4 of the fight.
I've seen this fight atleast 20 times, and worst case scenario is 115-113 Oscar and that's being generous giving trinidad earlier rounds he really didn't deserve.
And one of the judges giving Oscar the 12th round also shows that something was up with the judging. Don King paid for that tito win, and it didn't matter if Oscar swept the final 3 rounds as strong as the first 9, they weren't giving him that fight on the cards no matter what.
