Can anyone take 88-89 Mike Tyson?

I remember watching a video once where somebody said in the comments 'Tyson in his prime, Tyson in his prime... **** I'm starting to think he should change his legal name to that'

 

Nailed it. Poor work ethic is a weakness in a fighter just like slow hands or a bad chin is.
I don't get to tell people I was the best middleweight in state golden gloves history except for that I like drinking and didn't train enough. "Tyson shoulda beat Douglas, coulda beat Holyfield, woulda wrecked Lewis".... Yeah well guess what Azzer.... HE DIDNT.

 

Rooney usually gets a mention

Mike was great but it's frustrating when people bang on about him being "unstoppable" etc in his prime. He just wasn't.

People watch Mikes highlight reels and get their knickies all wet thinking he was unstoppable. The problem with these highlight reels is that Lewis, Holyfield and Douglas weren't in them.

 

How many fights did Tyson lose under Rooney?:-(

 

I think you'll find every fighter has excuses for a loss.

 

He showed stretches of vulnerability in fights under Rooney.

 

Prime Tyson was by far best ever...Clay or Louis would,t last 3 rounds

I loved Mike Tyson. I'm just not blind to the fact that while he was exciting. He truly only beat a bunch of nobodies, and lost whenever his opponent was scared. Had poor work ethic.

Hard to accept I know

 

You can say a lot of fighters in their primes were absolute beasts when they didn't have other fighters to challenge them, there will always be arguments when a fighter goes on a run without a worthy rival or perceived guy on their level challenging them. People say Jones Jr was unbeatable in his prime for example, Pacquiao had Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather was arguably beaten by Castillo in his prime, Chavez went over 80 unbeaten but did he fight another guy on his level, it goes on. Leonard faced Duran in his prime, won and lost, Hearns faced Leonard and Hagler and lost, beat Duran, Duran faced Hagler and Hearns and lost, beat Leonard and lost to Leonard... you can say Duran wasn't really on a fair playing field with the weight he came up... but the point stands, he fought great challenges in his prime which lay in the higher weight classes, Jones Jr fought Toney but other than that, he didn't exactly have a gauntlet. He went up to heavyweight, Tarver he came back down and lost a lot of his aura with the weight coming off, so RJJr in his prime could be another Tyson argument.

 

Tyson was in his prime he just didn't train for the fight whatsoever. That's not a legitimate excuse that's a weakness in a fighter
