What are the advances in Modern Training Methods

    i am also not a big historian on pad work

    but it has to have been around for a for more then 30-40 years

    i have trained with coaches were around in the 50's and 60's and they worked the pads with me....

    but it would very interesting to actually know when pad work became common

    I dont know a lot about various boxers training habits (like many on here do) but one of things that i can recall is that Jim Jeffries was very big on diet and he always said that it is surprising how little you would need to eat, when you are in training. I cant remember exactly, but i am fairly sure his tea consisted of one lamb chop with the fat cut off. I am not sure whether or not he compensated with having more meals through the day, but i know he didnt have the big meals at any one time. I had always thought that this sounded maybe a little too light on food, but it seems to be more consistent with what you are saying. So maybe his diet was a little more modern than others?

    The run of 30-60 mins you talk about is interesting, looking at most modern heavyweights, i get the feeling that they skip this part of training, or at least take it easy. How far would 30-60 mins usually be? Would it be about 5-10 km, maybe more?

    Interesting info on the pad work...I thought pad work had been in use longer than that.

    For me, the main improvement has been in diet. It's not that today's guys eat different foods or anything, but they have more knowledge about protein, carbs and fats, and they also eat smaller meals more often, as has been said.

    To give an example, Kallie Knoetze ate seven (!!) steaks mere hours before his fight with John Tate, supposedly for energy. No informed fighter would do that today.

    The big problem in comparing generations is the issue of illegal performance enhancers though. It's difficult to know just how big a factor it is in modern sports. (Although I'm sure it plays a huge role.)

    This is probably not the best thread to put this in, but here is a cut and paste of of one of the posts over on the training forum, which i thought interesting in relatino to Wlad's diet.

    David Williams has been Wladimir Klitschko's personal chef and training camp manager for the past 10 years, going back to the Samuel Peter fight in 2005. The best article I found about his nutrition plan is from BoxingInsider, and is linked below; it is about 6 years old, so certain details may or may not have changed since then, especially with Klitschko being that much older. Per an article from the BodyBuilding website, also linked below, Chef Williams "advocates an old-school, three-squares-a-day approach... (He prepares meals) for Klitschko not based on some macronutrient chart, but on how Klitschko feels."

    This seems overly simplified. Frequent fights might be helpful for physical and mental stamina, but it also means shorter careers, greater injury risk, and less time to develop and hone specific skills and tactics.

    This is true,and also fighters being better thru poverty is not true either,the smarter ,more healthy fighter wil progress much better than the struggling ,uneducated one.Maywether/Klitchko's ,Hopkins,RJJ and many others are very well educated some even have phds or degrees...Ali himself was into politics.The idea is the dumber,less wealthy person is going to be better is nonsense.
