I believe Mercer was a big enough puncher and good enough to land it to do Norton in. Norton was better but I don't like that match for him. Mercer by TKO.

i don't doubt that was possible :good

Mercer was a beast, he did not train hard for many fights and gave some horrible performances,,,,,yes its a excuse but it is the truth as well :bbb,,, Mercer at his prime was a beast :rasta

I think this is one where you would have to favor Norton... He was more consistent, and proven against better heavyweights. BUT....... If Mercers turns in a rare good performance he might be able to upset him. Say this this fight takes place 10 times I favor Norton to win 7 or 8 of them.

Easy??? Even if Mercer to win by KO(certainly a possibility) it would likely be a late rally while well behind on the cards. Nothing to suggest this would be an easy fight for Mercer, regardless of which way it went. Do you think Damiani, and Morrison were "easy" fights for Mercer? He had to rally to win both of those.

Norton by decision, with Mercer having his moments.

Norton by majority decision. He would find a way to win.

It would be very competitive though. Mercer did good against Holyfield and Lewis. Mercer also has the better jab.

Mercer could be outboxed. In addition to Holmes and Ferguson (whom admittedly Ray did not really train for) Damiani was doing a paint job on him before Mercer landed a hail mary.
Ken may not have had the stoutest beard, but it was decent enough.
I can see him outworking an always dangerous Mercer for a decision.

Agreed. Its like what another poster said earlier. It generally took an elite huge puncher to make Ken fold and better if he was past prime at that. Mercer could crack but he wasn't the type of bomber that Foreman and Shavers was. And his skills and mobility were limited enough to be outboxed.

Old larry was better than Norton...Norton didn't remotely beat anyone like Mercer,,and this would be a horrible match up because Mercer would walk right thru him.You also negate another fact that Mercer was bigger than Norton also so the physical advantage Norton usually had isn't there either.Mercer was an Olympic gold medalist h,much more fluid, hit harder, ahd the better chin and was a slick boxer, need I go further?

Norton beat ali but that's because someone finally smartened up and learned if you pick your shots jabs /hooks after Ali throws his you can beat him.Mercer arguably beat Lewis,so your theory he couldn't go another level is also false. The truth is he lost to better fighters than Norton ever was,he also lost some ,i'll take a ready Mercer over Norton.Fighters like Mercer who had a chin and can punch was all wrong for him.

? You're honestly brining up a few pounds difference and making something of it?

Norton was taller than Ray actually but Ray ( when in shape) was a few pounds heavier than Ken.
    No difference worth mentioning....
