I don't rate Monzon as highly as some but you can't really compare the two at this point in Golovkin's career. Monzon was never stopped in 90 fights so he likely goes the distance and with his resume and experience he has to be the favourite. Golovkin still has a lot to prove to even be mentioned with the greats like Monzon.
I can't believe some of the buffoons on here. His best win is probably Martin Murray and now he's going to beat Monzon! Which clown on here said he's too big? I despair.
Monzon Showed against an absolute prime Hard Charging Bennie Briscoe that he could fight quite well off the back foot, and indeed survive a rocky spell, At the end of his career, he could cope admirably with the Aggression of that Colombian Firebrand Rodrigo Valdez... I have little doubt that he will cope with the Aggression of GGG... Woiuld GGG cope with the Vicious Long range counter Bombing of Carlos..? He would know that he is not in with a brave but outgunned Martin Murray.. Carlos used to luxuriate in and wind it up leisurely over the 15 rounds ..rarely having to go into top gear, I will pay GGG the compliament of saying that Carlos has to find 5th Gear here, and he does, ultimately it might be the long right hand bazookas of Carlos that closes the show... circa 14th Carlos is one of those fighters that look a bit awkward, and unfluent, but inside the ring his effectiveness is felt by his opponents... and if he has to engage that in reserve..5th gear..
If he can beat up heavyweights in sparring he sure as hell can beat up any middleweight. To his credit Carlos goes the distance but takes a Hell of a beeting
Go actually watch some Monzon, this isn't some super hero we're talking about. He's a guy who had a significant size advantage on most of his 160 opponents and still had to employ the clinch ad nauseam. He wouldn't do shit to Golovkin, he's not going to outbox him and his power is average (58% KO), he has been down plenty of times, you can't have that questionable chin v GGG. Golovkin is not going to be outboxed at 160, period. The only way he loses is if he gets caught with a knockout punch. If Monzon was in the division today, he wouldn't go the distance and if he did, he'd be badly beaten up.
Monzon was rough, shrewd and relentless. Unbelievable stamina. Great infighter that almost doesn't exist today with the amount of clinching that is allowed. I don't think anyone could fight off the ropes like him. I rate GGG highly but he has to do a bit more before I'd give him the nod over Monzon. I truly don't see him knocking Monzon out. That guy had a great chin.
Also, I depsisd Monzon. He was a mean person in and out of the ring. Plus he ruled the diviision for so long I grew sick of him. But I give him his due. I wanted him to lose for years and we all know how that went.
I like GGG alot but we need to see a bit more from GGG before we start mentioning him in the same sentence as Monzon
I like GGG a lot but he has never even remotely fought a fighter the class of Monzon. I find all these calls of 'Golovkin KO' really strange, especially against Monzon, who had a piece of cement for a chin.
Monzon was dropped three times by a guy with a 31% KO record, the other guys that put him down weren't big punchers either.
