Both prime in the mid 80's. Who would you pick and why?

Yeah, Dokes had a pretty short reach for a decently tall heavyweight.

I think Pink had more going for him overall, but Dokes was a good fighter with very quick hands. I think it could go either way, but I'd lean toward Thomas.
Dokes is certainly in this fight though. Nice matchup.

    Thomas' jab neutralises Dokes' speed.

I find Thomas more impressive than Dokes. Good wins over Spoon and Weaver, while Dokes' best win was a questionable stoppage of Weaver, followed by an even more questionable draw with Weaver.

Thomas, only because Dokes was a drug addict, even when he held the WBA title. Dokes had the skills and movement to outbox the plodding Thomas, but he would not have the stamina to move and box for the duration, so Thomas would catch up with him in the later rounds like Coetzee did.

Good fight, but I like the Thomas jab to dictate things and pull out the win.

Both men had incredible talent and natural ability and yet both had very short primes due to destructive lifestyle habits and lack of devotion to their craft. Their primes also just barely missed each other's. Dokes career took a dive after being laid out by the bionic hand of South Africa while Thomas's boxing life was just starting to peak around the same time. On a positive note for dokes, he did see somewhat of a rejuvenation in the late 80's and put forth a gallant effort against Evander Holyfield in one of the most memorable heavyweight meetings of all time. Unfortunately for Pinklon, he never regained world class composure after 1987 but managed to extend his career by settling for fighting on the journeyman level, putting together a streak of wins in the 90s.. As for who would win ? Difficult to say.. Thomas had a superior jab and arguably the better chin while dokes had faster hands, and was more multi dimensional. He also proved he could go the fifteen round distance and without checking I'm not sure that Thomas ever did. It would be a tough fight but a tactical one that only a true boxing fan who appreciates real skill would enjoy. I don't see this as being a crude slugfest at all. I'm leaning towards Pinklon Thomas by close decision but I say that with no real conviction. This anybody's fight.

    Pinklon Thomas

I mean how could he miss that huge head with his jab.

Both had strong talent, but prime-vs-prime, going with Dokes. He had a certain toughness, and fought slightly better competition, and that would edge Thomas and that strong jab.

Both are very over rated today .. both were never as good as you thought they would be .. both were limited .. Dokes had limited power and partied away his prime .. Thomas was a recovering heroin addict and essentially a one handed guy with a Liston like jab but was not a terrific combination puncher of any sort and also had a very short run .. neither had as much natural talent as Witherspoon or Page although PInklon looked pretty solid against Witherspoon and Coetzee ..

I'd go with Thomas, his jab will break the rhythm of Dokes. Dokes likes to work inside and throw fast flashy flurries. But the Thomas jab will keep Dokes on the outside and Pinklon will find a home for his Jab and right cross. If Dokes is able to get by the jab and work inside he may outwork Pink and get the nod but I'll go with Pinks ramrod jab to control the fight and Dokes.

    Pink wins by UD.

Can't see Pinklon going for broke like Dokes could, with would hurt him in a tight fight.
