I didn't realize Duran was that huge of an underdog against Davey Moore.

Akinwande beating Welch. Welch was on his way to becoming at ATG, just listen to his interviews from that time, he could ve beaten Lewis Tyson and Holyfield at the same time.

The day my old man came home from work on Friday night, and dear old Mum didn't have his weekly treat of a steak dinner on the table. He never, ever got over it. Something about the rent being overdue, apparently. Who gives a fuk? It was more than 60 years ago.

 

Leonard was an all-time great. Hagler was, too. Hagler was supposed to win, but everyone (Where I was that night) was rooting for Leonard.

The big shockers for me were:

* Randall-Chavez I ... Nobody in the arena seemed to be there to see Randall, and when he floored Chavez and got the decision, it was stunning. Not only did Randall beat and floor Chavez, he GOT the decision. I didn't think I'd ever see Chavez lose a decision.

* Tarver-Jones II ... From Tarver saying to Jones, after the referee asked if either had any questions,"Yes, I have a question. Do you have any excuses tonight, Roy?" ... to Tarver flattening him with one punch in the second round ... all of it was shocking, considering Jones had recently won a portion of the heavyweight belt. That was just wild. Tqrver was so confident. But I didn't see that KO coming at all.

* Barkley-Hearns I ... Going back a ways ... this one just blew my mind. I'd never seen Barkley fight before. His name seemed ridiculous (Iran!). Hearns beat the hell out of him for two and half rounds ... and then Iran came back and flattened him, and then, after Hearns got up, he knocked Hearns out of the ring. I watched that tape a thousand times in the days after the bout. I just couldn't believe what I'd seen.

* Andy Ganigan-Sean O'Grady ... Going back even further ... and this probably wasn't among the biggest ever but it was a shock for me at the time ... O'Grady was a huge media darling at the time. He appeared to be on the way to beating Jim Watt for the lightweight title ... and a headbutt and death threats seemed to cheat him out of the title. Then he fought Hilmer Kenty and dominated him to win another portion of the lightweight belt. Everyone thought he was the best at lightweight and the next big thing. And then Andy Ganigan just destroyed him. There weren't any message boards at the time. But I remember sitting in my room at my parents' house and just being stunned. I couldn't believe it. Again, I'd never heard of Ganigan before. I turned on the TV to watch Sean O'Grady, and Ganigan just ruined him. O'Grady's career was basically over.

And, unlike Leonard-Hagler and some of the others on the list, I don't think there were many people in the arenas that night expecting or rooting for the guy who scored the upsets I mentioned. To me it's even more difficult to score an upset when you're surrounded by fans of the other guy. (Hell, the night Duran beat Moore, I think they only let Duran fans and relatives in the building.)

Having said this, I think if Berto knocked out Mayweather in two rounds ... it would shock some younger fans like the Tarver, Ganigan and Barkley wins shocked me at those times.

These were even more shocking because they were so sudden.

If Berto dropped Mayweather and outpointed him, I think it was be similar to Randall beating Chavez. Even when Randall appeared to win, you didn't think they'd give the decision to him.

Berto would probably have to drop Floyd AND outpoint him to win a decision.

Not the biggest but certainly deserves a mention is Junior Jones over Barrera. An often forgotten fight

 

Hopefully Adonis Stevenson gets beat by Karpency to get added to the list soon too.
