Boxing fans since the 80's, how popular was Mike Tyson at his peak?

So explain his popularity in say, Japan? He was mobbed there worse than in the US.
Even my mom knew exactly who Tyson was. If you didn't, you were living under a rock. It's that simple.

 

From 86 to at least 88 Tyson may have been the most famous athlete in the world and one of the most famous people in the world .. .. Jordan came after .. Ali before .. I don't even think Leonard who was absolutely huge for a non-heavyweight hit Tyson's levels on a global scale .. he drawled Mayweather today .. if Tyson was in his prime today the numbers would be astronomical ..

 

Yep. And you living in South Africa and claiming he was popular only ads to the growing list of countries.. Now watch him come back and say how people in Peru or Kuwait or some obscure country with no cable back then ever heard or him..

 

Yeah man he was in all the magazines over here, not just fight magazines; everyone from all walks of life knew who he was, or had at the very least heard his name and knew he was a fighter.

 

I told the other guy that any kid in 1988 could have told you who mike Tyson was, due to wide media coverage, his face appearing on every mag cover and his video game. His response was " not every kid had Nintendo. ". LMAO.. Priceless

Tyson was HUGE...bigger than boxing...Jordan as popular as he was, was never as big as Tyson at his peak of popularity....he was a knockout artist that always came to fight..he backed it all up in the ring..his Nintendo game is still one of the biggest sellers of all time...he was tabloid fodder..his fights were events you couldn't miss...you have guys in here that seriously dont want to give Tyson credit for ****....he was the all time grossing fighter of all time, had 5 of the all time ppv records, a case can be made for him being top 5, a case can be made of him being bigger than Ali...**** outta here...his return from prison was a event in itself and thats cause he was a hell of a fighter that was special....i guarantee if Lewis or Wlad was locked up at their respective peaks..no one would give a **** about their eventual return to the ring.....its a small community of weirdos that hate Tyson on a personal level and that's usually confined to the realms of the internet..in real life public opinion he is only behind Ali, Louis and Marciano...100 yrs from now he will still be talked about..

He was also mobbed in Brixton when he went to the UK to fight Francis, but 4 miles up the road in the West End him and his entourage were almost ignored when they went shopping.

That is a far cry from the claims made by some that " every " ten year old girl in the world new who Tyson was, every adult, and he was more well known than Ali.

They didn't, they didn't, and he wasn't.

Yeah Tyson was so great his PPV record fight involving Lewis was shattered by a Light Middle title fight, which involved HBO's biggest grossing PPV fighter ever, one Oscar De LaHoya.

I couldn't care less about America or South Africa, I can tell you Tysons face was not " all over " the covers of every newspaper , and magazine in Britain and Europe alone. There is 750 million people that were not sitting like morons awaiting Tyson every move.

If he got coverage it was in the sports pages. His pathetic lifestyle was of no consequence to anyone with a brain.

And you Tyson cretins have the nerve to say he was more popular than Ali, what a fukking joke. If Ali came back to a semblance of health, even to the level he was 10 years ago he would be invited all over the globe by heads of state, business, and community leaders, just to be Ali, even now.
