I think Spinks would be the favourite in a Charles fight. Very hard guy to beat at 175.

A, for the record only.Ken Overlin was NO southpaw. Overlin was
"a poor man's version of Harry Greb" who was perpetual motion
in the ring bouncing to and froe from an orthodox position...:hi:

I don't know if I'd make anyone a clear favorite over him. But I'd pick a few who i think would have a 50/50 chance.. Michael Spinks and Gene Tunney are two names that come to mind.

I'd take Eddie Gregory over Michael Spinks if (stupid)
Eddie didn't have to get into a 'boiler tank' to make weight after his (brief) HW fiasco against Snipes. He showed up looking like a 'shriveled pear' against the Jinx, didn't have his A game to say the least, and the Associated Press STILL called that fight a draw.
Every fighter has his ifs...ifs...but IMO Eddie with his head on straight could well have been a HOF'er. Ezz WAS a HOF great.

Eddie had a chance to do it again 2 years later and backed out of it at the last minute when he weighed in 2 1/2 pounds over weight and refused to try to lose the extra weight. What is your excuse for him there? Eddie was never as good as Spinks and never anywhere near as consistent.

....overlin was a switch hitter and occasionally fought southpaw....he'd shift from orthodox occasionally .....sometimes within a round. technically he was listed as orthodox because that was his usual stance.

back to "he couldn't beat ken overlin"

nat fleischer's illustrated of boxing refers to overlin as a cutie.

one of the elkus family who managed ezzard used the same term.
richard christmas told me (years later) that overlin was "real tricky"

I'm not trying to make overlin into a great fighter. But he had about 150 fights when he fought ezzard had only 22, and was too smart for him. the match was made as a win-win proposition .....overlin couldn't punch so ezz wouldn't take a beating, and losing to overlin by a decision wouidn't be a black mark...just a set back. if ezzard won it would be a big step forward.

if someone picks a loss that looks much worse, take the one to kid tunero. tunero was a veteran but ezzard was the favorite and should have won. instead, tunero won a clear decision. years later
ezzard told me in that fight he "just froze. tunero showed me things i'd never seen before."
