For all the keen fans of the amateur game on here - probably the best amateur fight ever.

Yeah I thought Ryan edged it to but the opponent LOOKED more aggressive.
Donovan outboxed a wild Yank but I didn't see Coughlan, aren't they just
    great?

I certainly felt so,Didnt start great so lost the first IMO,had a brilliant second, dominated the opponent thought he was going to count the guy,the russian started the third well but died in the last minute and coughlan took over completly,
I had it 29-28 coughlan, how some judge didnt give him a round was scandalous, but the irish coach told coughlan before he went out for the decision, just remember where you are and who you are fighting so looks like they were expecting it as well,
Hopefully that may benefit Donovan as these things tend to at times,

Thought the Russian won the 1st and 3rd, not by much tbh but it was close, no robbery .

You could argue that alright, the russian landed some very clean shots at the start of the third but i felt coughlan did enough down the stretch to pull those back, but the second round was a clear round for the cork lad i felt, yet it was judge against him,

Agree with both of you a bit but i felt overall Coughlan dominated the action, cutting off the ring and getting his shots off, forcing the Russian to break ground. In a close fight-which it was-ring generalship should decide.

It was hard to watch Valdez hammer recent Frampton foe Chris Avalos. Avalos loks so bad it does take a bit of the shine off Carls win. Avalos looks beyond shot to me and needs to retire today. Frampton couldnt miss him and neither could Valdez. Probably the ease with which he hammered Avalos contributed to Carl being a bit complacent about the Gonzalez fight, and led to the problems he had early on in that fight.

Francis Cleary claimed gold at the Brandenburg Youth Cup in Frankfurt/Oder in Germany this morning – and also scooped the Best Technical Boxer Award.

The Olympic BC ace, who beat a Russian opponent in the semi-finals, beaten a second Russian,Vladimir Strygin, today on a unanimous decision to finish on top of the bantamweight podium.

Shane Flavin had to settle for silver after he lost out in the flyweight decider to Aidos Arapov of Kazakhstan.

“Francis beat a very good Russia southpaw in today’s final, a tough lad. Francis got better as the tournament went on, his movement especially. That’s why he got the Best Technical Boxer Award. An excellent performance today and throughout the tournament, said Irish coach Jimmy Halpin.

“Shane was terrific in his final. He was up against a very good Kazakh and gave a terrific performance. Michael Nevin should have been in the finals, but we’re delighted to be bringing home two medals and the award.”

Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 11pm tonight.
