I think he's going to have to rebuild himself at domestic level. Take on Murray or the winner of Fielding-Smith.
I thought George Groves was slightly unlucky loosing the split decision when in different circumstances could quite easily have got a second judge to see things his way. If he drops his colossal purse demands a fight with James Degale could easily be made next year. Although changing trainer (maybe rejoining Booth) could be a positive move I don't see it as the be all and end all for Groves.
The problem with groves and this become more apparent under paddy is that he peeks far to early in a fight and doesnt appear to have a plan b
Groves perhaps needs a new trainer, he is on a losing run, and he should not be out on his feet exhausted after 7 rounds. Although Jack is a decent champion, he is not a high output pressure fighter. He simply should not be that gassed, that early in the fight. I say get a new trainer, look at his stamina particularly and make another run at a world title shot. Do not take another shot for at least 2 more fights, as he needs to regroup.
I missed the fight but is was supposed to have been close? I think he's too stubborn for his own good. They were trying to get him to fight Degale for the vacant IBF but he wanted 50/50 split so he turned it down. Now he's lost that fight has lost a lot of its appeal and why would Regale fight him now. He'll never go back to Booth, who took him from prospect to challenger and could be an undefeated world champion had he stayed with him.
To be fair to Groves the fight was very close. Lets get one thing straight - A split decision against a Yank in USA is not the end of the world. Groves is a fine boxer in many ways. That said Groves is too tentative, has no left hook, and doesnt work the body. Also he is far too open to a right hand. When you're away from home AND down in the first round, you HAVE to seize the initiative and put something on the other guy. But somehow tentative Groves just couldnt seem to manage to do it.
He has to go back to Booth. Let by-gones be by-gones and go back to him. They were perfect. I do think - and I did say - that Jack was being overlooked, though.
