European Games champion Michael O’Reilly claimed gold at the Feliks Stamm multi-nations in Warsaw tonight. The Portlaoise BC middleweight beat Bartosz Gołębiewski of Poland on a unanimous decision to claim his second major gold medal this year. “Michael gave an exhibition of boxing, top class all round. Ceire was very unlucky to lose out and Wayne performed very well,” said Irish head coach Billy Walsh. Ceire Smith and Wayne Kelly will be bringing home silver after tonight’s finals. Kelly gave a fine account of himself in his first major international final against seasoned campaigner Sam Maxwell in the 64kg final. A tight and very technically affair went the way of the English fighter on a unanimous decision. Smith, boxing for the fourth time in four days, was edged out on a split by Poland’s Sandra Drabik. The Irish flyweight beat World No. 1 – Marlen Esparza of the USA – en route to the final. She said: ” So, silver medal for me, four fantastic contests in four days. Disappointed, but I’ll be back again. I have to say a huge thank you to my coaches Billy Walsh and Zaur Antia for working endlessly with me here and also to the main boss Brian McKeown at home. “Also, I want to say a massive thanks to everyone for the continuous support and kind messages. It’s a pleasure representing my country each time I step into the ring.” The Irish squad are due home via Dublin Airport at 4pm tomorrow afternoon. Yeah, I found it hard to score, messy clash of styles, The Turk made the fight but got picked off a bit by the back-pedaling Donovan, kinda reverse of the Coughlan fight but lower quality, but we lost both. Corner seemed sure of the win so maybe ringside the could see what really landed well.
Its tough alright, but not surprising really. Just a tough guy, Anto - not a great boxer if we're honest. Anto just isnt all that good. Running Andy Lee close was the highlight of his career (although admittedly that was more a case of Andys limitations than Antos talents).
More a case of timing than anything i would think,Andy lee before the death of stewart and and lee now would wipe the floor with Fitz but there was a 12 months period where he was just not himself, I agree with everthing else though,Tough guy, tough opponent but no more,Spike showed us that, Good luck to him whatever he decides,
^ Yeah - guys that are too brave and tough for their own good need to be protected from themselves sometimes. We dont want Anto (or Andy) to end up like this guy. Shawn O'Sullivan. Very sad story. Looked like Jerry Quarry, fought like Quarry - and trajically ended up like Quarry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz4AHrttlx8
Think you're right about Sean beating Corr (you're deffo right about the other matter but lets not continue to crucify a guy for what happened 30-odd years ago Fra - probably before you were born in fairness. Lets hope he got his act together since eh?) Shawn beat Tate and was robbed too. Ironically for an amateur who fought like a pro, S O'S had no success when he did go pro! He fought here , amateur (and pro I think) - I saw him live at the time. Very nice fella too. Very, very tragic story all round: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8VNC383QzI
I was just wondering why you felt the need to bring up a conviction from 30+ years ago, thats all. :huh Now that I recall it was 'politically related' am I right?... so now we understand your enthusiasm for him. What about poor Shawn O'Sullivan though, more importantly?
dont know much about osullivan.. as you rightly said..hes b4 my time but going by boxrec he didnt fight for long...he must have endured the damage during his amateur career:good
He was real superstar material at the time, good looking, personable, articulate, all-action style - and lets not forget, regrettably, the right complexion too for mainstream media. But his lack of a defence caught up with him. Sugar Ray Leonard was one of his backers as a pro as I recall. Its a pity Shawn didnt incorporate some defensive skills into his game. He suffered at least one hideous ko as a pro, but as you say , his sort of brain damage is due to an accumulation of punishment over time. Some guys need to be protected from themselves.
Another Irish boxer to win a Gold medal this week was Lewis Crocker who won in Spain and also got best boxer, two ko's, this kid will make some pro serious power and skills. Video of his knockouts in link, And to think he couldnt even make the Samoa team or the Brandenberg cup team, goes to show there is 2 or 3 world class talents in every weight class coming through, I actually think the next 10 years will bring more medals then the last 10 at senior level.
