I've always said Leonard was actually the bully in this fight and these antics lead me to think I am correct in saying that. He seemed ****sure of himself and Hagler seemed overawed and unsure. Not the first time Hagler let his insecurities get to him in a big fight and it cost him, imo. I've scored it sporadically over the years and the best I could ever give Marv was a draw. Usually it's Ray by a point or two.
Same score here... i always feel that anyone who scores this fight for Hagler is not being truthful to themselves. Sugar Ray Leonard "walked the fight".. Hagler knew he had been well beaten at the final bell, yet tried everything to convince the boxing fans worldwide he was unjustly beaten. shame on Marvin Hagler!
Really? It's usually the opposite. Usually the sound of the crowd noise, commentators talking Ray up... Leads to voting for SRL. I guess it's different with you. BTW, I have it a draw or Hagler barely winning.
They actually talked Hagler up more than Leonard for most of the fight. For stretches of the fight Clancy acted as if every punch Hagler landed was brutal while ignoring a lot of Ray's clean work or dismissing it as just flashy and showy. Other commentator even had Hagler up midway through the fight.
I'll never understand watching a fight without volume though. You guys don't trust yourselves not to be swayed in a bad way by the crowd or the commentators? You end up missing the sounds of the punches and the fighters.
Couldn't agree more. I never turn the volume off. Though I disagree with the commentators talking hagler up, because in my view, it was justifiably so. It wasn't flashy, but should've been duly noted. I thought they were talking about Ray more than Hagler, so again we don't see eye to eye there. But hey, at least there was something we agreed on, finally. lol
I'll have to re-watch it but at the time I thought it was much closer than what you have. Two rounds for Hagler? I don't think so.
Not my scorecard - that is one of the judges, JJ Guerra. I had Hagler winning by 1 point or 2. It's possibly a draw. I don't have a problem with Leonard winning close either.
I don't think I ever saw a fight before or after this fight that Guerrera worked. Leonard's camp must have dug him up and got him approved. Not to sound prejudiced but some of the Latin judges have turned in some questionable scorecards in WBA and WBC title fights. Usually, they're biased towards the Latin fighter.
He did quite a few decent/fairly big fights (mostly before Leonard-Hagler, for obvious reasons), including Hagler-Minter. http://boxrec.com/person/400971/25?human_id=400971&role=judge
Still judging fights at 81. Good for him. I stand corrected. He judged quite a few world title fights and most of his scorecards don't look outlandish. I think he missed the boat on the Leonard/Hagler scoring, though.
That is a bad card. Hagler won more than two rounds. The best part of this card is rounds 1-4, because Leonard likely won them all. This means Hagler needed to win 6 of the last 8 rounds to produce a draw. Sorry Hagler fans, he did not do that. 7-5 for Leonard
Very good! I agree, Leonard won the first four rounds, then hit / ran / showboated his way to win some others. Hagler allowed Leonard to pick the ring size which was large and 12 rounds ( Could have been 15 ) in exchange for more money. Leonard himself said he was very tired after round 12. Had this been 15, Hagler wins it. Hagler knew he lost when the final bell rang. He was out thought in the ring and out negotiated outside of it... and it bothers him to this day.
Very close fight. Leonard dominated the beginning rounds. Hagler dominated the middle rounds and really took it to Ray. Ray somehow survived the middle rounds gained a second breath. He then made the last 2 rounds closer again. At the end I feel like Hagler deserved to keep his title, with the way Leonard fought. A draw would also have been fine for me.
