Will there ever be a time where the average person can name the heayweight champion?

50 years ago an old woman could tell you who the heavyweight champion of the world was; now a bar full of 30 men probably couldn't do that.

Hell even 20 years ago, they could tell you Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis.

Will we EVER experience another era where the general public will know the H.W champion?

 

No american or brit, no interest in america or the empire. Sad but true...

 

Who cares? In US, an average person can't name our solar system. Many probably wouldn't be able to name the continent they are on. I wouldn't give a rat's ass whether they can name a HW champion.

 

Holyfield and Lewis never had that over here, not even close... only Tyson.

Maybe if boxing ever gets big again, and there's another guy who just knocks his opponents over inside a couple of rounds. But a lot of Tyson's popularity also had to do with something they call "zeitgeist".

They did.

Holyfield's fights with Tyson gained international recognition. Lewis was big in Britain but for the wrong reasons...most had a grudge against him because he represented Canada in the Olympics yet tried to change to British.

Lewis-Tyson was a huge fight worldwide.

 

To be honest, besides Floyd and Manny, try and get an elderly normal citizen to name a current world champion at all and they would probably struggle too. It's not just HW, there are no full circle Boxing world champs emerging, Floyd is as good as retired, as is Manny.

 

Is boxing on the way to death? Or will another H.W emerge?

True, but that doesn't mean everyone would like him.

Everyone knew who Larry Holmes was, but they didn't like him.

I doubt it. We live in an age of information overload with instantaneous digital media and the media world has fragmented to where people can indulge in incalculable obsessions.

There are more sports, more subcategories of sport, and complicating things further are other distractions like hobbies, gaming, and thousands of other distractions.

Gone are days of the local newspaper dominance and a sporting world of 3 or 4 major sports. Why be a casual fan of any sport when you can be a die hard fan of any sport you prefer? No matter how obscure the sport is you can now passionately follow to your heart's content.

Boxing has become something of an elitist sport for a specific segment. Holdovers from it's glory days may sigh but boxing now has to compete for coverage with sports that didn't even exist 100 years ago. Further complicating matters is the near non-existence of boxing being taught to kids. Parents have abandoned that route and football is facing the same future. Why saddle your kid with a life long brain injury for the sake of sport especially when there are far less injurious sports?

I don't look down on people that can't name the heavyweight champion of boxing. That's just the way it is and it's probably gonna get worse.

Throughout EU, the most well known names in boxing are Mike Tyson and Klitschko brothers. Virtually everyone knows them. Muhammad Ali is also still very well known.
