I'm not saying it's not possible but I can't think of the division and year deeper than the early 1990's middleweight. Here is Ring's Top Ten for 1992: Julian Jackson James Toney Reggie Johnson Roy Jones Jr. Mike McCallum Sumbu Kalambay Gerald McClellan Lamar Parks Bernard Hopkins Thomas Tate What was deeper than that?
The '60s featured a quality middleweight division as well, with Griffith, Benvenuti, Tiger, the Fullmers, Giardello, a young Monzon...
Nigel Benn Chris Eubank Both must've been campaigning at 168? I can not name a deeper division than the above you mentioned. That $hit was incredibly deep.
Parks is kind of a sore thumb on that list. How good could he actually have been, if he weren't infected? Good enough to belong in that company from a historical standpoint? (outside a Ring top-10 snapshot?)
An interesting question. There are some years that are more top heavy like the 1980 welterweight with Leonard, Hearns, Benitez, Cuevas, and Duran but the the back end doesn't match up. Ditto the 1974 Heavyweights with Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Quarry, Lyle, Bugner but the bottom three. 1943 lightweight is my pick if you reject the heavies. Beau Jack Sammy Angott Bob Montgomery Allie Stolz Willie Joyce Ike Williams Lulu Constantino Slugger White Juan Zurita John Thomas
I'll go light heavy around 1979-81: Matthew Saad Muhammad Eddie Mustafa Muhammad Michael Spinks Victor Galindez Marvin Johnson James Scott John Conteh Yaqui Lopez Mike Rossman Jerry Martin Mustafa Wassaja Lotte Mwali Marvin Camel Carlos DeLeon Dwight Qawi about to burst upon the scene as well
It's really good. But check out the MW division that belonged to Ketchel: Ketchel Papke Kelly Langford Young Peter Jackson Joe Thomas Frank Klaus Philadelphia Jack O'Brien Jack "Twin" Sullivan That is wild. And I don't have time right now, but I think Greb's MW division might have been narrowly better than that one.
1991 Ring top ten for the heavyweight division? Holyfield Tyson Bowe Ruddock Mercer Foreman Witherspoon Tucker Lewis Moorer Honourable mentions Morrison, Holmes. I'd say that was pretty stacked.
I think there are probably several years that would be equal, but it is very subjective. Opinions will differ widely. Still it's fun to do. RING MAGAZINE December 1986, Lightweight Title Vacant Edwin Rosario Hector Camacho Greg Haugen Jimmy Paul Livingstone Bramble Jose Luis Ramirez Terrence Alli Meldrick Taylor Pernell Whitaker Cornelius Boza Edwards
I immediately thought of the 175lbers you wrote. What a list- so many bad asses who put on great fights and were technically skilled as well. The first 8 guys on your list were a tough night for anyone and would greatly trouble Hopkins, Kovalev, Dawson, Pascal and Tarver in their primes.
