And if you go back far enough you'll find a common point of origin anyway.

Boxing can be an ugly sport where sadly nationality and ethnicity are still played upon to generate interest in fights. There were a lot of people trying to sell the AJ vs Cornish fight as England vs Scotland. Thankfully AJ played that down, but it still happens all the time. Same thing with Klitschko vs Povetkin.

There is no consistent proof that Tyson is or is not Irish. The whole Irish thing seemed to start around the time of the 2008 Olympics, where he lost to Price and could not represent GB at the Beijing games. He then attempted to enter the Irish ABA championship, but wasn't eligible to compete in either the championships or to represent Ireland. He apparently couldn't supply any family birth certificates or passports etc... to support his claims to be Irish at the time.

Since then, Andy Lee's father (Andy Lee claims to be Tyson's cousin) has signed an affidavit to say that Tyson's grandmother was Irish, meaning he was allowed to box Martin Rogan for the Irish title as a professional as the affidavit was good enough for the Boxing Union of Ireland. That is the only documentary proof of Tyson's Irish roots.

It shouldn't really matter, but Tyson has been able to pack out the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, so whether he's Irish or not, he's still a big enough draw this side of the pond.

That's because the Irish will accept anyone regardless of the facts. Mo Farah could pretend to be Irish tomorrow and they'll willingly believe it to be true. When there are such a lack of decent sportsmen coming from the island, the chance to piggy back onto a successful sportsman is a chance that the Irish do not ignore.

What about them? They identify as British and have British roots.

Tyson's Irish roots are a letter.

It is a shame. Apart from the amateur boxers over the last 10 years or so...it's an embarrassment every time the Olympics roll round for Ireland.

British is a legal term not an ethnicity.

And which of those have any actual English blood?
