Does anyone else think that Michael Grant vs Jameel MCline was a weird fight?

within maybe two seconds of the bell sounding to start the first round, McCline goes out and drops Grant with a punch that didn't even look like it had much wind up. Grant rises and they go at it for a little bit longer with McCline throwing some bombs, then Grant quits complaining of a leg problem.. Not sure why I've always had a problem with this fight but it looks bizarre to me.

    lmao,

yeah I know what you are saying, this fight was a disappointment.

Here is the scoop, a bad leg injury often times cant be FELT by the fans. Thus we will never really know how REAL it was. I will watch it again in a second but wasn't it his ankle? Or his knee? I cant recall, anyways, put it this way, if the guy went to hospital and had a legit injury then I tend to give it the benefit of the doubt to the injured fighter,,,if you pop your knee out really bad how are you going to continue fighting? Your mobility would be all but gone, you could probably fight on for a few seconds but you would just get tagged and your knee would give out and you would keep falling to the canvas and the ref would stop it anyways probably after calling the doctor in.

Maybe it was a case of the injury only being partially limiting and Grant using it as a excuse to quit if that's what you are implying? It did kinda look like that but at the same time how would we know sitting at home what the guys leg felt like for real?

A knee or ankle injury could certainly end a fight. But that punch he got decked with didn't even look like that hard and Grant took a **** load of hard shots from guys like Golata, Purity, Gonzalez and Lewis.

ok I just watched it again, lol, I forgot what a shyte fight this was, I forgot how quick it was as well,,,,

yeah it looked bad, it was almost a jab type of first punch that didn't look that hard. Very bizarre fight. notice how lampley sets it up right before they start saying late money came in on Jameel, lol

He broke his ankle in two places when he fell. He couldn't stand on it, so they stopped the fight.

It's not that rare. It just happened to Sergio Mora against Danny Jacobs a month ago.

I've always suspected a fix myself. And who knows maybe the broken ankle was incidental.

    ok well that makes sense,

I think the OPs point however is the very first punch that puts Grant down doesn't look very powerful, not saying it wasn't, just saying imo it looked shockingly "light" to knock Grant down. It the very first punch of the fight.

yeah that's pretty much what I was alluding to. Maybe the fight was legit.. And if he really did bust his ankle then definitely. But it started off looking very suspicious of a fix.

Oleg Maskaev dropped Derrick Jefferson less than a minute into their fight and Jefferson broke his ankle, too.

    It's not uncommon.

I thought it was Roberto Duran, but maybe I'm wrong, who fought on USA network or ESPN years ago in the 80s and he hit a journeyman and dropped him, and when the guy stood up, his foot was facing the wrong way ... like almost backwards ... like he nearly freaking severed it. Really disgusting.

It was vile. He stood up, and his foot was facing the wrong way and he fell down again. And the camera on him quickly switched to the other guy -- maybe it was on a Duran undercard. He fought on both networks back then.

    Nasty.

Be interesting to find out who that was and weather or not his entire career ended that evening. I don't think I'd ever fight again.

The best part of the Grant-McCline situation was Teddy Atlas had been on ESPN all week bragging about how great Grant looked in the gym and how Teddy was going to "make him a champ" ... and all that Atlas bull.

Then Grant lost, and Atlas had to go back to work in shame. Atlas ruined Grant. Grant was kind of a stud before he fought Lennox Lewis, and then he brought Atlas in for his comeback and Teddy did his "psyche job" on him. Teddy's an expert at tearing fighters down ... like the military does ... he just has no clue how to build them back up.

Atlas totally derailed Povetkin's career for years, too.

I wish I could remember the fight. The only thing memorable about it was "the foot."
