Smallest fighters you would favor over Jack Johnson?

    Who are the smallest fighters (measured by weight class) that you would favor in a 12 or 15-round head to head matchup against Jack Johnson?

    I wouldn't favor anyone under 170 over a prime Johnson. Has to be at least a light heavyweight. Out of the light heavies I could see doing it are Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Tommy Loughran, Gene Tunney, Ezzard Charles, and RJJ. These guys I can boxing Johnson's ears off for a 12 or 15 rounder. Expect for Fitz I can see Fitz catching Johnson chin and if Ketchel can knock him down Fitz can keep him down.

    Marciano/Spinks/RJJ/Tarver/James Toney/Hagler/Patterson/..off the top of my head! Theres probably a multitude of them.ive never even followed or study.didnt this guy struggle with out of date 160 pounders?

    I can't favor Roy doing it at 168 too weak. Too much risk of Johnson landing hard and KOing him like Ketchel. I know Roy is a much better boxer than Ketchel but Johnson's clinching with all 200 pounds of him would wear down any 168 pounder I think. I'd favor him at 175 because he'd still be fast and strong enough to handle Johnson's clinches and not get drained. I think those seven pounds are just what he needs for me to favor him.

    What rules.past or modern..is dirty boxing allowed?This would effect some picks.With modern rules he would get comfortably out boxed by many.

    Although it may seem a little strange: Perhaps Barbados Joe Walcott in an early stage of Johnson`s career. Walcott fought against heavyweights (for example versus Joe Choynski) and - as far as I know - Johnson was his sparring partner for some time.

    RJJ? Greb? Wouldn't mind seeing some great MW's in action against JJ ... if he had a series I'm guessing he'd lose at least a couple?

    If you teleported the likes of Roy Jones Jr or any decent sub-heavyweight fighter in the last 25 years back to 1908, Jack Johnson would be too much for them in the type of conditions the older fighters fought in.

    Johnson fighting in a modern era with modern conditions would still be dangerous, he's pretty witty in the ring, and that his cautious style will lure the smaller fighter in side where he would psyche them and overpower them.
