Reality Check: The Truth Behind The Kovalev Vs Stevenson Who's Ducking Who Situation.

I'm going to attempt in Laymen's terms to breakdown and shed some light on who's really ducking who.

Adonis Stevenson burst on the scene with a savage one punch KO of Bad Chad Dawson back in June of 2013, which would have been a hell of a lot more impressive had Andre Ward (of all people) not already stopped him the previous year, add to that Dawson had been KO'd in sparring with headgear on and with 16oz gloves by an old shot to hell Edison Miranda. Soon after he had his first defense against Tavoris Cloud handing him what should have been his third loss that year after Hopkins had schooled him and Campillo outclassed him but got robbed on the cards, yet Adonis couldn't get the KO he had to settle for an RTD due to a cut instead, he followed that up in December of 2013 with a defense against Tony Bellew. Bellew who'd been down a few times in previous fights wasn't the best opponent, or the biggest puncher but he still managed to drop the glass jawed Stevenson and the ref didn't give him the credit for it. End of Stevenson's impressive 2013 campaign.

While Stevenson was beating some okay competition Kovalev was on a collision course with him steamrolling his fair share of fighters as well, he destroyed Campillo (who really beat Cloud) in 3 quicker than Fonfara did later that year in 9 and Beterbiev did in 2015 in 4. He then took out White in 3 and followed that up by dispatching Nathan Cleverly the guy who'd handed Bellew his first somewhat questionable loss (it should have been a draw) with relative ease, and he ended he year with a bang by nearly beheading Sillakh in 2. End of Kovalev's impressive 2013 campaign.


So of course HBO has the brilliant idea that Sergey Kovalev should face Adonis Stevenson for the Lineal Light Heavyweight Title in 2014. But Adonis no like that idea very much. Now let's take a closer look as to why. Adonis got knocked out by Darnell Boone in 2 rounds, Sergey Kovalev got dropped by him but got back up and won a SD over him. Then they both rematched Boone... Kovalev came in with a vengeance determined to get Boone out of there this time, supposedly he'd hurt him in the first fight but let him off the hook, and he did just that by stopping him at the end of Round 2 by way of a vicious beating. Then Adonis thinking he could get his revenge on Boone and take him out with ease after he'd already been softened up by Kovalev only 9 months before, but he still had trouble taking Boone out, he pounded him for six rounds until Boone finally went down. So I venture to guess that that had to tell Adonis who has a very glassy chin "that Kovalev hits a lot harder than me and I'm a KO artist, uh oh I better avoid him in the future." Later confirmed by Boone in an interview he said that yes Kovalev hits a lot harder than Stevenson.

Which brings me back to The Ducking Of Sergey Kovalev, what did Adonis do when confronted with the possibility of facing the Krusher, he promptly hired Al Haymon as his advisor, and of course Haymon doesn't do business with HBO since that small little thing of him funneling Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez and all of the other Golden Boy fighters over to Showtime, in an effort to help his buddy Steven Espinoza try to crush HBO Boxing to death. What a sweetheart Stevenson is right? He basically told the channel that was determined to make him a huge star after the KO of Dawson, so much so they went out of their way to not bring up his deplorable crimes that he served time in prison for, to go **** themselves and he ran off to Showtime in an act of complete and total unmitigated cowardice, because he was scared to death of Sergey Kovalev. That is the reality of the situation no matter how you want to spin it, it is what it is, and what it is was a clear as day duck of epic proportions.

In the following year Stevenson had Fonfara who was KO'd by Derrick Findley in 2, lost to Glen Johnson but got a gift and was losing to Campillo until he got the KO, cherry picked for him by Uncle Al, and low and behold Fonfara managed to drop the glass chinned Pimp but lucky for Adonis it was late in the fight and Fonfara was a little too gassed to adequately follow up on it. Then he went all out and got a really terrible opponent in Sukhotsky who'd lost by shutout to Cornelius White who Kovalev had already destroyed, and by Braehmer, easy win for Adonis. and then he dragged Bika of all things up from Super Middleweight and still couldn't get a KO.

Yet Sergey took on the undefeated but overmatched Agnew and Caparello stopping them both for the first times in their careers as expected but then he impressively shutout master boxer Bernard Hopkins via 120-107x3 scorecards, who was coming off a list of wins over Cloud, Shumenov and Murat which are arguably just as good as any of Stevenson's recent wins. And then went on to stop the iron chinned Pascal who'd never been stopped in impressive fashion.

Now here's the saddest part Hopkins challenged Stevenson and Stevenson ducked him so he had to show Stevenson how to man up and risked his life to prove a point. Then Pascal was primed and ready to face Stevenson after his win over Bolonti and guess what happened, Stevenson ducked him too so in yet another act of bravery to show Adonis what a real man with big cojones looks like he faced Kovalev who he called the real king of the division as well.


This brings us to the supposed duck of Adonis by Kovalev. Main Events had a deal with NBCSN who put their fighters on multiple occasions due to an exclusive contract they had with the channel starting in 2011. Well guess what here comes Al Haymon waving the PBC cash under their nose and they boot Kathy Duva's ass right out of the door, which I'm sure had her a little hot under the collar. But thankfully HBO came to her rescue and gave her fighters a home on their channel. So when it came time for Sergey Kovalev to renegotiate a deal with HBO they offered one of their marquee fighters that they want to build their channel around a very sweet deal and he under the advisement of his manager Egis Klimas and promoter Kathy Duva resigned with HBO to an ironclad contract. Its so nice to see a fighter be loyal to the channel that made him a star and the promoter who's given him everything, that's a very honorable quality few people possess.


So guess what all of a sudden after the Pascal win he becomes the mandatory for Stevenson's Lineal WBC World Light Heavyweight Title, and of course out of the blue Stevenson is ready for the match... now he's willing to face the man he ran to another channel to avoid, he got brave all of a sudden. Of course all of this is a bunch of horse**** because Adonis most likely never even entertained the idea of facing Kovalev. Haymon is a shrewd business man and he knew full well that if Kovalev went along with the purse bid, which is when two promoters bid on who will promote the match, what venue it will be held in, what channel it will be shown on etc. and if the promoters can't come to terms the person who makes the highest bid wins the right to promote the match. Let's think about this for a second Al Haymon has a ****ton of money and has deals to broadcast his matches on NBC, CBS, Showtime, SpikeTV, NBCSN, ESPN and Kathy Duva is basically exclusive to HBO, so take a wild guess who'd win the purse bid, that's right Al Haymon would.... and the match would most likely go to Showtime PPV and Sergey Kovalev would have to break his contract with HBO to partake in the event. So Kathy Duva pulled out of the purse bid which is exactly what Al Haymon and Adonis Stevenson knew would happen. Therefore they can have the bragging rights that Kovalev is ducking them when in reality that couldn't be further from the truth.

And now Haymon's gonna try to pull the same trick again, Beterbiev called out Kovalev and after the Mohammedi win Kovalev said he'd be willing to face Beterbiev. Beterbiev accepted and Duva sent Yvon Michel and Artur a very generous offer and they backed down. Why? Its because they want to become the mandatory for Kovalev's IBF title....and it'll go to purse bid, and they have more money because Haymon is repping Beterbiev as well. Kovalev will have to pull out of yet another purse bid and he'll be stripped of the title and it will basically be handed to Beterbiev on a silver platter. Haymon is a master at dirty behind the scenes politics, and he'll do anything to make sure his fighters don't have to face top competition yet get all the rewards and the titles through careful manipulation of the BTS rules of the sport. All the while the casual fans are none the wiser.

Meanwhile as Kovalev was trying to get Beterbiev to face him.

Stevenson faced Tommy Karpency who barely edged a half dead Dawson and lost by way of stoppage to Fonfara both former Stevenson victims.

And to make matters worse Stevenson ducked Pascal yet again, saying that in order for him to be willing to face Pascal, Jean must become his mandatory first. What a coward.
