Kinda takes some shine off Floyd's win over Oscar. A 40 yo Hopkins outboxed Oscar before beating him up, looked just as sharp and just as defensively responsible as Floyd did. Just makes me think Floyd has never met a real true great technician.
You're crazy. Anybody could see oscar was winning that fight, or at the very least dead even until that liver shot got it. Oscar had no business at 160lbs, but he feared no man. Remarkable what he did. His was already in his cokehead, alcoholic phase by then...still held his own. Floyd fighting to a draw against 35yr old strung out Oscar is pretty sad. Prime Oscar at 140,147, 154 dominates him.
I remember two scores for Bhop and one for Oscar. I always thought Bernard had it but it was close. Also remember that it was a catchweight and Bernard looked dead on the scales.
Would you not expect a career middleweight to look more impressive/ have an easier time beating a junior middleweight at 160 than a welterweight in his first fight at 154?
Hopkins just started slowly as was his tendency later in his career. He gave up the early rounds to Taylor as well in their fights. Hopkins age and the difficulty he had in making weight at that point meant Hopkins then just took time to get going. Once he did he got De La Hoya out of there without any difficulty.
Not to mention that Sturm beat Oscar more comfortably than Floyd too. Still, Oscar did not belong to MW at all. He had the This content is protected to try though (unlike Floyd who would reject even a catchweight around 157 for the current king Golovkin).
